Sometimes It’s Just One of Those Days

I got up early this morning and headed out for my training run in the Garden starting with the Incline Club but heading east instead of west. I was planning on running 9:15 miles, a few seconds faster than last week. I had my usual slow start; I just take a while to get warmed up. I was running with someone I had just met who hadn’t run the race, or the course before and he was much younger, and faster. “Good,” I thought, “He’ll…

"Just when I thought I was out….they pull me back in”-Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III

Hi, my name is Neal and I’m a recovering triathlete. So I thought. 2015 turned into a transitional year for me on the athletic front. I was set to race Ironman Texas a couple of weeks ago but some financial dings made it so Ironman wasn’t in the cards for 2015. I altered my schedule and put some endurance events on my calendar as that’s just a part of what keeps me going. I’ve wanted to do a 100 mile ultramarathon for over 10 years…

My Little Muse

I’ve said many times that one of my biggest joys is running with my kids. My two teenagers have decided they really aren’t into the sport anymore, but my youngest, 11-year-old Eric, still loves the challenge and is willing to join me on my running…

And So it Begins

Last week I was honored to be selected to join The Mighty Marmots. Who are the Mighty Marmots?  We are a group of runners chosen to complete the Triple Crown of Running on PikesPeakSports.us Triple Crown of Running Race Team. It starts with the Garden of the Gods 10 Miler, then The Summer Round-up, and culminates with either the Pikes Peak Ascent or Marathon. This will be my first time running the Triple Crown and my training has started in earnest. …

As some say “Teamwork makes the dream work”

I’ve have always been an athlete ever since I can remember. Which also means I have been on countless teams. Being on a team means everything to me. It’s not only a family, but it’s also a group of people working together to obtain a common goal.  Some of my closest friends are people I met on some of the sports teams I played on.

Growing up I was on the cross-country, basketball, and surf team. But once I tore my ACL playing basketball during my senior year of high school,…

One of THOSE kinds of posts...

Yes, this is one of THOSE kinds of posts...the sappy, trying to be motivational kind, which is rare for me as my primary means of communication is sarcasm.

My sisters (and our significant others) planned a road trip to Moab and Lake Powell for the holiday weekend. No one else in my family (or my husband) like to run. They legitimately think I'm bat-shit crazy for even entertaining the idea of running up Pikes Peak. To them,…

Finding Joy in Mudville

I went for a run this morning in my new Mighty Marmot PikespeakSports.us shirt and I was not struck by lightning! Tim and company made a great selection of a wide variety of runners all dedicated to running the Triple Crown series. Make sure to read their blogs. I just did and learned from them.

While jumping over puddles and trying to avoid the muddier sections of trail in Monument Valley Park I passed a fellow runner near…

Stand For Something!

As a Georgia girl, I certainly enjoy my share of country music. One song that always sticks in my mind is by Aaron Tippin who sings, “You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.” Released in 1991, it became an anthem for Gulf War soldiers who were looking for purpose and meaning during a mission…

The Little Runner Who Could

Let's be clear, I'm a cyclist. An avid mountain biker with respectable technical skills who's logged thousands of miles stomping pedals and for three years on only one gear. I remember when I switched from gears to single speed and suddenly became identified as one of *those* crazy single speeders. I loved the…

Back For More!

Great news! I made the PikesPeakSports.us Triple Crown Runner team AGAIN! After wearing the esteemed Purple and Gold for the 2013 team, I’m back for more, even though I swore after the Pikes Peak Ascent that I would NEVER do that race again. (However, I also once said I’d never get married, never have kids and never…

My 32 mile journey from the Cactus in Alamogordo to the Clouds in Cloudcroft

Well, I haven’t blogged since my PikesPeakSports.us team days, but I wanted to write up a race report for the Cactus to Cloud 50Krace I did this weekend in New Mexico. First off I have to say, that one of my favorite things about trail running is travelling to places I have never been, run some great new trails and meet the local trail…
