Colorado Springs resident Leroy Popowski was the first to the top of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak - on a conventional race bike - in the inaugural Assault on the Peak ride on Sunday, Aug. 29. Papowski and about 335 other riders braved 75 mph winds and a windchill factor that dipped below 5 degrees....Colorado in August.Gotta LOVE it! Papowski completed the 28-mile course from Manitou Springs to Pikes Peak's summit in about 2 hours, 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Two dudes from Boulder actually summited first on "electric assist" bikes ... nice to see folks trying any kind of environmentally friendly travel.
