Alex Nichols wins Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race 50, sets overall race record

Alex Nichols had to stop and think about it before he got out of bed on Saturday. He was getting over the flu - kind of - and the though of running 50K up and down the hills in Cheyenne Mountain State wasn't terribly exciting. But he made the call to go, and when he was finished the race title and course record was his. Nichols (27, Colorado Springs) who runs for the Colorado Running Company, finished in 3:51:06, breaking the old mark of 3:57:35, set by Ryan Burch in 2012. Dane Mitchell, 35, of Boulder was second in 3:59:03. Jason Koop (34, Colorado Springs) held the lead at the halfway point, but bonked on the hills at about Mile 20 and bravely gutted-out a third-place finish (4:05:52.)
