Fountain Valley High School teacher Tommy Manning qualifies for world mountain running championship

Colorado Springs runner Tommy Manning (right) placed sixth in the men's race Saturday at the Mount Washington Road Race in New Hampshire, earning a spot on the U.S.
Mountain Running National Team that will compete in the World Mountain Running Championships Sept. 5 in Kamnik, Slovenia.
Manning finished the grueling 7.6-mile course in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 27 seconds.

Chris Siemers of Arvada won in 1:00:22.
Four area runners were among the top 20 in the men's race, including Manning, Alex Nichols (16th, 1:08:06), Ryan Hafer (19th, 1:08:44) and Peter Maksimow (20th, 1:08:46).
Arvada's Chris Siemers won with a time of 1:00.22 and qualified for the national team. Rickey Gates of Woody Creek placed fourth in 1:02:34, giving Colorado three on the six-member men's national team.
In the women's race,  two Colorado runners qualified for the national team: Brandy Erholtz of Bailey (third, 1:12:53) and Megan Lund of Basalt (1:13:30). Laura Haefeli of Del Norte narrowly missed qualifing for the worl championships. She placed sixth in 1:15:47.
Ethiopian runner Shewarge Amare captured the women's title with a time of 1:08.21.
Other finishers from the Pikes Peak Region included Sean O'Day (78th men's race, 1:22.4); Kelli Lusk (11th women's race, 1:23.19) and Nancy Hobbs (78th women's race) 1:48.14.
