Jessica Beechum became the first visually impaired runner to complete the Pikes Peak Marathon, and she did it with support from Achilles Pikes Peak, an organization that helps disabled athletes live active lives. The Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race 50/25/10K, set for April 29 at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, will serve as a fundraiser for this important local nonprofit organization. Start of the 2016 Barr Trail Mountain Race

The 2016 U.S. Mountain Running Champion, Joe Gray, captured the overall win, while Sylvia Nordskar, an All-America cross country skier at the University of Denver, dashed to the win in the women's race. Gray finished the 12.6-mile out-and-back course in 1 hour, 30 minutes .02 seconds. Nordskar, running in only her second trail race, clocked 1:57:55.
About 300 runners lined up in front of the Pikes Peak Cog Railway Depot for the 7 a.m. start. The course ascends about 3,630 feet to the turnaround at Barr Camp (10,200 feet).

Snowy start to the Greenland Trail Race 50K

Runners were greeted by tough conditions on Saturday at the Greenland Trail Race 50K. A cold spring storm brought about six inches of snow and a biting north wind to the Front Range foothills. But the bad weather didn't deter Colorado Springs-area runners who captured five of the top seven places in the men's race. Dan Vega, 48, of Colorado Springs, stuck it out for the victory. Vega finished in 4 hours, 59 minutes, 11 seconds. Eric Hallam (5:34:54) and Mike Teger (5:38:39) finished second and third. Stephen Pickett and Robert Heavner ran home sixth and seventh respectively.
Courtney Dauwalter of Golden won the women's race and placed fifth overall in 5:41:29. Marie Feser of Denver was second, followed by Susan Cobb of Centennial.

Barr Trail Mountain Race: Andy Wacker talks alarm clocks, running fast, Pikes Peak plans

Andy Wacker got a late start - by about seven minutes - in the Barr Trail Mountain Race, then passed the entire field. Though he hit the finish line first, race officials chose to declare Wacker and Noah Chepngabit race co-winners after some confusion on the course late in the race.
