Bolder Boulder: Wacker, Hutton running for Team USA

Andy Wacker and Brittni Hutton talk about the opportunity to run for Team USA in Monday's Bolder Boulder. Hutton won the Bolder Boulder citizens' race last year, beating about 25,000 other women runners in the process. Wacker has placed second in the Pikes Peak Ascent in each of the last two years ... and promises that he'll be back in 2016!

Mountain Runner Andy Wacker made a brave attempt at breaking Matt Carpenter's Incline record on Friday, but came up short on a hot morning. Flanked by members of Team Colorado, who helped clear a path through hundreds of Incline hikers. Wacker charged to the Incline's summit in 19 minutes, 59 seconds.
"Well, that felt horrible," he said. "I'm just trashed. You have to be fresh. I ran U.S. Mountain champs (last week) and ran up Longs Peak (14,259 feet) two days ago. That was probably a bad idea. I couldn't recover in time."
The scene at the summit was jovial as Brandon Stapanowich, Zach Miller, Alex Nichols, Allie McLaughlin, Brent Bailey and Pete Maksimow rolled in shortly after Wacker. An abandoned mile-long railway bed that ascends 2,000 feet above Manitou Springs, the Incline is a popular challenge for elite runners, Olympic athletes, soldiers and daydreamers of all stripes.
Carpenter, the 12-time Pikes Peak Marathon winner, clocked an 18:31. While many consider that the best time ever recorded on the Incline, former pro triathlete Mark Fretta has also claimed the record, insisting that he finished in 16:42 in 2006. About five years later, Fretta was suspended from competition for four years by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for "variations in his blood profile."
So who really has the record? It depends on who you believe. Members of Team Colorado have indicated that they chose to recognize Carpenter's mark.
Wacker said he wasn't finished trying. "I'm going to keep going until I get it," he said.

A talk with 18-time Leadville 100 finisher Ricky McDonald

Denver fireman and mountain bike racer Ricky McDonald stopped by the ProCycling Palmer Park 50 on Sunday to visit an old friend.
McDonald raced in Andy Bohlmann's Sand Creek Sports events 14 years ago. He had not seen Bohlmann until Sunday.
"He recognized me right away," he said.
McDonald is best known as the rider who has finished all 18 of the Leadville 100 mountain bike races. But he hasn't changed much. He still races on the same bike he used at Sand Creek races in 1997, and he still wears a mechanic's shirt. He talks about it in the video. Check it out.

Mountain bike champion Cam Chambers looking forward to 24-hour national championships in Palmer Park

Cam Chambers talks about the 24 Hours of the Colorado Springs moving from the Air Force Academy to Palmer Park. The change suits him just fine. Palmer Park contains some of the best single track in the Pikes Peak Region. The race will serve as USA Cycling's Mountain Bike 24-Hour National Championships. Chambers won the single speed 24-hour championship last year.
He is also excited about the ProCycling Palmer Park 50, a new race added to the schedule by Andy Bohlmann of Sand Creek Sports. The 50-miler is set for Sept. 18 in Palmer Park and will give riders an opportunity to race in the prak prior to the 24-hour championships.

Pro and Cat 1 racers make the first climb in the Ascent Cycling Series No. 3 in Colorado Springs

The Ascent Cycling Series, produced by Andy Bohlmann and Sand Creek Sports, keeps gets better each week. About 135 riders took to the singletrack at Bear Creek Terrace in Colorado Springs on Wednesday. J.J. Clark won the men's Pro/Cat 1 race, while Tracy Thelan captured the women's title. The final race of the series is scheduled for June 19 in Cheyenne Mountain State Park.
