8.  SUPERBOWL SUNDAY- FEBRUARY 4TH, 2018--  THE SUPER HALF MARATHON--

1:24:51-- 23RD OVERALL-- 2ND PLACE AGE DIVISION PODIUM- 4TH MASTER OVERALL.   I raced very well and paced very well, my first mile was fast and should have been 15 seconds slower than it was- here are my mile splits:

1-- 6:00              7--6:35                 13--6:32

2--6:23               8--6:19

3-- 6:26              9--6:29                    average pace =6:27

6--6:29                12--6:31

This is off of three weeks of new revised Craig Young and Coach Spell improvised training.  I took it marathon pace slower on purpose going out and then pushed lactate pace coming back and tried some new strategy from coaches.    I can beat Brad Poppeli, Peter Flemming, and  Marcus Corbett !!!!!!   I AM THE BEST -- NOT THEM !!!

MY COLORADO RUNNER MAGAZINE INTERVIEW -MARCH 2018 INTERVIEW--

________________________________________________________________________

The past 8 weeks--  I have not competed since the Superbowl Half Marathon in February--

I was training perfectly, executing Craig Young Training--  the week after the Superbowl half, a perfectly completed 10 mile lactate caused my left knee to flare up,  this workout wasn't the only cause of the inflammation,  but brought out inflammation and swelling that was there for a few weeks now.

With the Boston Marathon coming up and other big races on the horizon-- me, my amazing Dr. Wife, Physical therapy, and my training team and coaches started to get to work on me.  Despite all of our efforts, we didn't have enough time to get fully healed in time for Boston which was today April 16th, 2018.   Therefore, I did not get to get in enough proper training to be competitive in the race, as I was in race wave 1.

Simply put-- after taking x-rays and an MRI--  I have inflammation under my left kneecap and some edema on my femur by my left kneecap.   There is no damage or tearing to my cartilage or ligaments in my knee.     It just needs time and healing.

MY THERAPY INCLUDES:

  • TIME OFF OF RUNNING-- VERY DIFFICULT AND DEPRESSING
  • CROSS TRAINING--  ONLY SWIMMING AND CYCLING--AND VARIOUS WEIGHT TRAINING/STRENGTH EXERCISES
  • SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE TRAINING
  • LAW OF ATTRACTION
  • NEEDLING
  • ULTRA SOUND
  • DMSO treatment
  • I need to work on stretching- hamstrings, and hips---  which in turn will make me faster anyway.
  • strengthening of my hip muscles.
  • AND I HAVE HAD A CORTISONE SHOT.

I HAVE LEARNED MANY THINGS THIS PAST 8 WEEKS OF SOME DO'S AND DONT'S IN TRAINING--   I WILL BE ELIMINATING SOME THINGS I USED TO DO AND ADDING SOME COOL NEW THINGS IN TRAINING.

I am amazed the horrible things many of you fellow athletes and runners out there are doing in your training and you don't even know the damage you are doing --- WOW !!!

I need a little more time off --  I am gently working back in running with my cross training.   I will be back with a vengeance soon.  WHEN I GET BACK TO MY CRAIG YOUNG TRAINING AGAIN-- I WILL BE AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE, THE BEST EVER !!!!!!

THE COLORADO SPRINGS "YOUNG AT HEART" RACING TEAM IS BEING RE-BORN AND IN THE WORKS.

I COULD NOT BE IN THE BOSTON MARATHON THIS YEAR-- BUT HERE IS MY VIRTUAL ENTRY

ROMERO-- BOSTON BOUND--  FOR THE 2019 BOSTON MARATHON

I will qualify again for Boston 2019 at American Discovery Trail Marathon on Labor Day 2018 !!!

And-- defend my Master's course record on the point to point course from Palmer Lake to America the Beautiful Park.

MY COMEBACK FROM BEING OUT DUE TO INFLAMMATION IN MY LEFT KNEE

I have been out of action since about a week after the superbowl half marathon here in colorado springs--  my left knee was in pain after a lactate workout perfectly executed a week after the superbowl half.

I was out for 3-4 months with time off and sporadic cross training including- water running, elliptical, and cycling

I went over (above) what I completed in therapy for the past 4 months.

My training team has worked on me for the past 4 months--  Several running organizations here in springs have received many inquiries about me-- wondering where I was in the racing scene ?   Was I ok?

Wondering if I was ok-- The running world has not been the same.

It has been a hard road to comeback-- again-- my knees are completely healthy--  besides some normal wear from age and running for 40 years.

Since Febuary-- to today-- I have continued --

  • Massage
  • cupping
  • subliminal training
  • Law of attraction
  • strenghting of my legs, knee, and hips
  • TENS
  • DMSO
  • Healing with thought control-- utilizing the 70% water makeup of the body and using my thoughts to create an outcome.
  • supplements
  • Even when I couldnt run-- I continued to move my joints to continue healing and prevent the damage that comes with immobilization.
  • I changed my training shoes to a zero drop-- I now train in ALTRA shoes specifically-   I still race in other brands.
  • I studied and improved my running form.
  • I continue to receive coaching, advice, and mentoring from Craig Young.
  • I received an evaluation and a strengthening and balancing program from Dr. Sam Wood-- many of you know her in our running community.
  • I have improved my diet which helps your hormone testosterone balancing.
  • And lastly-- even not being out there competing -  I knew I was the best out here-  better than anyone-- and when I come back-- I would be awesome !!!!    I am dangerous now--   because I know more now than I did before I got injured !!!

I got a steroid cortizone shot at the end of April in my left knee--    this was actually the catalyst that started my healing process to explode--  I didn't abuse the shot-- I continued a little more time off-- no racing -- light sporadic training--  more cross training.

MY COMEBACK

In may I started with 10 min every other day-- starting on easy trails like penrose, bear creek, monument valley park.   Then I moved to ten min every day-- then 15 minutes every other day-- then 15 minutes every day-- moving to harder trails-- then 20 minutes every day-- at this time I started racing and hovering around 20 -30 minutes a day.

Continuing good nutrition and supplements, massage and cupping.  Positive affirmations and reinforcement.

I lost a lot of conditioning -- it is just a fact-- my left knee got real tight around the joint-- and I felt it here and there----but today it has improved 100%--- I have done no speed work and no long runs but I have been racing and now I am training !!!

HERE IS MY CONTINUING RACING LOG STARTING WITH THE FIRST RACE I DID SINCE THE SUPERBOWL HALF---

* note-- the cortizone shot would be in my system for about 3 months.

I jogged easy in the grand prix St. Pats 5k in March- did not register-- Left knee hurt a couple days after that.  Still not feeling good.

_________________________________________________________________________

APRIL 1ST, 2018--  I jumped into the Hams and Hamstrings race just as a test on my left knee at the time-- this was non competitive- easy jogging.   Time and place was not relevant here.     * I finished the 5k-- my left knee hurt going up the gentle incline on the trail to the turnaround.

_______________________________________________________________________

SUNDAY- APRIL 22, 2018-- I jumped into the Cherry Creek Sneak 5 mile in Denver-- again- just as a test on my legs-- non competitive- easy running - finished the 5 mile race ok.  No serious issues.

I did a 45:38-- 322nd overall- 21st place age division-- I did not race hard.

They took this picture of me during the national anthem at the race start !!!

_____________________________________________________________________

SATURDAY-MAY 5, 2018-- TAKE 5 IN THE GARDEN OF THE GODS--   again  mostly just a trial to test the knee-  I was registered and took it easy for a couple miles on the rolling hills-- then picked it up a little in the last 3 miles.   I was 78th overall-- 47:59-- 9:36 average pace-- 6th place 45-49.    Non competitive.   KNEE MADE IT THROUGH OK-- NO HUGE ISSUES-- JUST TENDER.

______________________________________________________________________

9.  NOW THIS IS WHAT I WOULD KIND OF CONSIDER KIND OF MY FIRST COMEBACK RACE OF THE SEASON-- I PLACED 1ST MASTER AND RAN HARD HERE (FOR BEING OUT OF SHAPE WITH HARDLY ANY MILES EXCEPT FOR THE SPORADIC RACING).

MAY 26, 2018-- THE HIGH DRIVE CHALLENGE 4 MILE-- MAD MOOSE- BEAR CREEK PARK--

5TH OVERALL-- 28:41 -- 85.87 % RANKING-- 6TH BEST TIME SINCE 2016.  1ST MASTER OVERALL.       Left knee hurt a little after this.

  • It was a rough start for me- but I came back as soon as we started climbing the switchbacks and I took out a lot of jabronees that did not belong in front of me.

  • Wore my knee brace on left knee.
  • We do enjoy doing this series--  I am a past long series champion in 2015 and 2016, and 2nd place overall in 2017.
  • In this race- we were told to go the wrong way twice-- the whole race was screwed up from the beginning--  several of us had to back track and get back on the right course-- I did the first 5k correct, but they had us go backwards again-- I ran so much longer than we should have -- I finally found my way back onto the correct final loop--
  • In the end -- on paper-- I ended up in 5th place-- ( knowing full well that 2nd through 4th obviously ran a much shorter course--  ending up in front of me)--   2nd 40-49--  39:23--
  • I should have placed 2nd overall -- behind Ben Payne.     No big deal--  just having fun in this series now at this time.    I literally have not gone 100% in either of the two races.    One more race to go in the series-- the 10k.
