Back to Triathlons

This weekend I completed a mini-triathlon at the local gym. I'm calling it a mini since the distances don't line up within the typical race categories. The distances were 200 yd swim, 10 mile bike on a spin bike and 3 mile run on the treadmill.

In my enthusiasm I started the swim at sprint speed. The first lap was feeling fast, but then the lactic acid creeped in and I slowed down to normal speed for…

JFK 50 miler review, nearly a year too late!

November 2019 already? Here is my JFK 50 race report from November 2018. It is a rosy race report because it is helped by the kind filter of time.

The last time I talked about this race, in October 2018, I was debating which shoes to use. I continued debating which shoe to use until the days before the race, but the snowy conditions on the hilly Appalachian trail section forced me to pick the…

Terror on Trail

Last night my daughter and I listened to Tales of Terror by The Dirtbag Diaries. It is, by far, my daughter's favorite annual episode. She gives this year's episode a 2 out of 3 on the terror scale. I scare easier than her, so I'm going to give it a 3. I had a hard time falling asleep and I'm going to be on edge the next time I get out for a run on the trails.

I'm trying to convince my…

Couch to 5k: Starting at beginner

After JFK 50 miler last November I was excited for the 2019 year. My training went great over last winter,   and I was planning for a late season 100 miler. But it all went to hell in July. I displaced my knee cap in mid-July from a random accident. My older kid accidentally tumbled into my leg while sitting on her bike while we were at Good Neighbors Meeting House. My foot was pinned by the bottom of the wheel and the upper part of the wheel hit right at my knee joint. Take 70 lbs times the…

Preparation for JFK 50

This post is a summary of my supplies and ideas for the JFK 50 miler that is coming up in three weeks. A summary of my training is not nearly as exciting, which consists of way too much treadmill time and not enough mileage.

About the Race

The JFK 50 miler is in western part of Maryland on the border of West Virginia and is scheduled for November 17, 2018. It is America's oldest…

Salida Marathon and the First Year of Long Trails

Last weekend's Salida Run Through Time Marathon marks my first year of longer trail races. Within this year I ran my first 50 miler, ran a gruesome 50 k, and trained a lot of mileage (last year). I was excited for the marathon this year, since I felt these experiences would help me improve my time from my first Salida.…

Already Thinking of the Summer Solstice

The winter solstice was just one month ago, and I am already thinking about the summer solstice! Not just because of the extra sunshine that I miss during this time of year. I signed up for the San Juan Solstice 50 miler. After creating a rough outline of my weekly mileage goals 5 months does not seem like enough time. I'll see how it goes and hope to survive the mountains and 50 miles.

Additional races for 2014:

Winter Series

Xterra 24k and/or Cheyenne Mountain… Continue
