Ask the Coach - What's an off season?

(Also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)

Do you advise the people you coach to take a break from training or lighten their workout intensity during the late fall and winter months? Or, should endurance athletes plow through the year at full intensity? --Tim

Tim asks a really good question. I'll start my answer with the answer to many questions…

2010 Harvest Moon Long Distance Triathlon: Race Report

So I participated in the Harvest Moon Triathlon this past weekend. It was a good event. I am by far, not a seasoned triathlete but I did apply some lessons that I've learned in the past, some new information that I've recently acquired and I learned some new things about how I would approach a long course triathlon in the future.

Here are the distances: Swim = 1.2 miles. Bike = 56 miles. Run = 13.1 miles.

First, my times.

I'm Back in My Teens

219 to be exact. Now that my weight is heading the direction on the scale, the time of year is coming that seems to help me become a well-marbled individual. A lot like a steak, to be exact so I am working a plan to continue my quest to become 85% lean. To be honest, I am enjoying being able to tie my own shoes without it seeming like a major accomplishment working around my belly. I also like showing my wife how I can take my pants off without unbuttoning them. I am still in that no mans…

Ask the Coach - What's up with those socks?

(this post also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)
This week's question has to do with recovery:

How do compression socks work? And do they help protect tendons from overuse injury?

If you've been to an endurance event in the last few years, you might have noticed more and more people wearing socks that go up over their calves. Fortunately the fashion trend of prior decades has not returned (we hope). What you are… Continue

Ask the Coach - HIIT Me and Training Time

(also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)

This week I'll answer a question from Michele:

When you need extra time training (and you only have so much time) is it better to do longer workouts one or two times a week or five shorter workouts?

and Scott asked me my thoughts on High Intensity Interval…

Age is just a state of mind

I was a spectator at the Pikes Peak ascent and marathon the weekend before last (alas, I am 3 months pregnant so could not do the race. Although I did do the Leadville marathon without knowing I was a couple weeks pregnant!)

Anywho, I was amazed by how many people did both events back to back. For those of you who do not know about this event, it is pretty extreme- a half marathon up Barr Trail all the way to the top of Pikes Peak on Saturday, and a marathon up and back…

A great workout on Saturday.

The Plan:

1. Get up early, go to the Manitou Pool and swim 1 mile.

2. After the swim, ride my bike up the pass to Divide and back down.

3. Run 6 miles in Garden of the Gods.

The SWIM

Everything started out great. I made it to the Manitou pool just before they opened, quickly got changed and was in the pool by about 7:05am. I swam 1 mile (1,600 yards). I would swim 75 yards freestyle and then… Continue

Hanging with the Kickstand Crew/Denver Cruisers...

This last Wednesday I had the pleasure of hanging out with the guys at Kickstand magazine in Denver created by Denver Cruiser's mastermind, Brad Evans. It's been inspiring to walk into their office down in the

Sante Fe Arts District just south of Downtown/Colfax Ave exit an enter a

room that is always filled with a new batch of cruisers. This time, an

all white (even down to the tires) city bike from my former home, the

Netherlands, stands out. A beautiful masterpiece of…

So That Is Where Old Man Skin Starts

This past weekend we photographed the 24 Hours in the Sage Race in Gunnison, Colorado. We hiked all over the 13-mile course taking photos and that was the best I have felt physically in a long time. I could not believe the energy I had covering the course. Nice discovery, but not the important discovery for me. In between riders, I finally answered one of my life questions that bugged me. How do you one day have old-man skin? I have…

Ask the Coach - the Scoop on Power Meters

(This post also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)

What's all this talk about power meters? How is it different from a heart-rate monitor as far as training goes? --Densie

Denise's question is a good one. If you are in to training tools (some might call them gadgets) then you definitely want to keep…

Ask the Coach - What about Wetsuits?

(also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)

In this week's Ask the Coach column, Dean has a question of finding the right wetsuit. He asks,

"How do I pick a wetsuit?"

For us who live in the cooler climates, triathlons are almost guaranteed to be wetsuit legal all year long. Wetsuit legal in USA Triathlon sanctioned races means water temperature 78 degrees or lower. (For more specifics you can… Continue

In This Corner, Weighing 225 Pounds...

225, I haven't seen 225 in some time. And I have this group to thank for me finally seeing success without feeling starved. I'm down 20 pounds. I have halfed my blood pressure and cholestrol medication with my blood pressure dropping down 20 points to 118/69, with a consistant resting heart rate of 48 bpm. And again I have this group to thank for my success. I took your suggestions and worked on one suggestion at a time. I had just started cutting back on processed foods…

Ask the Coach - Pre-race Fueling

(also found on http://neoendurance.blogspot.com)

Joe asks: How much should you eat before a race/morning of? Do you slim up to be lightweight or load up on fuel?

I am sure this question or one very similar has gone through all endurance athlete's minds at one time or another. We know that eating quality foods provides our bodies…

Trying to get my training back on track.

Somewhere along the line, this summer I got off track. Maybe it was the mid summer cold I had or maybe it was the emergency trip to Alabama to visit my father-in-law who was having medical problems. Not sure when but my training went South and so did my motivation.

I've been trying to get back on track lately and I'm off to a pretty good start this week.

Monday: Early morning interval ride on the trainer. Later that evening I went for a 4 mile run with my daughter. She's… Continue
