Whatsup? No, not the head nod, how ya doin’ version of 'sup…but the stand-up on a paddle board version! “SUP” is a term that has recently become popular in the outdoor adventure sport world. According to SUP World Magazine, the activity has been around for thousands of years. In the 1940’s, surf instructors in Hawaii would use paddles and stand on their boards to get a better view of the surfers. It was mostly a Hawaiian sport and wasn’t until 2004 that the concept of Stand Up Paddle Boarding final made waves from Hawaii to California. By 2009, it was the single fastest growing part of paddlesports in North America!

Colorado, being quite the landlocked, water-lacking state that it is, has yet to see the sport really take off here. Slowly, outdoor gear rental shops started providing SUPs for rent and big box stores like Dick’s started carrying models that fit the budget. Great local places to rent or buy a board are Pikes Peak Outfitter and Underwater Connection!

Thanks to the Outdoor Retailer, UpaDowna has had the chance to experience the joys of SUPing since 2011 when we tried it at the Summer OR Demo Day. We knew right away that this was a program we needed to eventually offer to our participants.

Finally, 4 years later, that goal has become a reality. Working with a SUP company out of Carbondale CO, Shaboomee, and also our program sponsor, Heuberger Motors, our dream became a reality!

In the summer of 2015, we’ll be offering two types of SUP activities here in Colorado Springs, plus some SUP events! Our “Paddle Party” (like us on Facebook here) will consist of a once a month “social” or get together, focused on all non-motorized water sports including SUP, kayak and canoeing. The other will be a dedicated SUP class for up to 8 people at a time.

Here is our tentative schedule so far (keep in mind, weather may change dates):

EVENTS:
-July 26th- Rocky Mountain State Games Same SUP Challenge, Prospect Lake, 1-5pm

SUP SOCIALS:

A gathering to just have fun and SUP (or kayak, or canoe) together one Thursday a month! Folks are encouraged to bring their own equipment/permits or borrow ours (limited to 10 boards).

TIME: 4:30-7:30pm

WIN A NEW STAND UP PADDLEBOARD!

Thanks to SUP Paddle Party sponsors Heuberger Motors and Shaboomee...we are giving away a co-branded Stand Up Paddleboard at the end of the SUP season!

How do you win it? Just come to at least three SUP Socials or classes total and you are in the drawing to WIN!

Flashback to 2004. I had met this crazy outdoorsy guy (soon to be my husband of 10 years!) and he thought it would be exciting for us to have a "first date" on the Incline. I highly opposed this idea, but as we drove closer and closer to the "slice in the mountain" (or how a non-incliner would describe it...) I realized that I had no choice.

We parked and started the trek. DANG that parking lot was steep! Now for the real trek...I took it slow the first time, knowing that I had not prepared for this at all. It was during the summer, so I was lucky. Later that winter, I was not so lucky as we would hike it again.

Granted, this is before it was "legal" so there was less people but c'mon...all the cool kids did it back then! Now of course, the Incline is legal, open to the public and soon because of amazing construction work...sustainable! All of this will mean increased traffic, especially when it opens next week. If you are a beginner or moderate hiker on the Incline, here's what you need to know about hiking it in winter....read more here...

The Colorado Springs community is stoked once again to be a stage in this year's USA Pro Challenge on Thursday, August 21st! Not only are we lucky enough to have Stage 4, a circuit race, here in the Springs, but our close neighbors up the pass in Woodland Park get the start of Stage 5! That means the riders will be in and around Colorado Springs for at least 2 days! The circuit race will allow race goers the opportunity to see the riders no less than 4 times and if you are camped out on Colorado Ave, you'll see them 8 times! This is great because you'll see amazing racers like Jens Voigt multiple times! BTW...this is rumored to be his farewell tour so bring your "SHUT UP LEGS!" poster!!

The Colorado Springs Stage 4 race starts at the Broadmoor and ends where it historically has ended every time it is here, downtown. The Broadmoor start will feature two laps of a "parade style" start and then racers will speed down Cresta and 21st north towards Colorado Ave.

Once the cyclists reach Colorado Ave, they'll take a right towards downtown Colorado Springs and race a loop on the downtown circuit heading north on Cascade, blast down Mesa, take a sharp turn right up Cache la Poudre then head south on Tejon. Here, they'll pass the finish line for the 1st out of 4 loops (their 5th appearance will be the finish) and then head west on Colorado Ave towards Garden of the Gods for their 1st of 4 loops there as well.

Approaching the Garden of the Gods, racers will take a quick right off of Colorado Ave. to 30th St. then a left onto Pikes Peak Ave. then up Ridge Road into the Garden, do a reverse loop around Juniper Way, past the main parking lot near kissing camels and then out the east entrance near the Visitor's center. They'll take a hard left and then an immediate right up Mesa Rd. down to Fontmore Rd. then a sharp left to 30th , left on Pikes Peak Ave, right on 29th and back to Colorado Ave and downtown for the remaining loops.

UpaDowna's suggestions for best places to watch:

For mode of travel, I highly suggest riding your bike! There is no way to see the action quickly and in multiple places unless you ride! Plus, you can park your bike just about anywhere for easy access when you need to leave. Bring a bike lock (unless parking at the FREE Bike Valet in Acacia Park), water, snacks, binoculars, a camera and sunscreen, cowbells or other noise makers for encouragement and a foldable chair if possible. Map of viewing tips here.

See the riders the most:

Anywhere along Colorado Ave. between Tejon and 30th st. You'll see the riders about 8 times along this route! Be sure to seek out a spot on the "west" side of Colorado Ave. in the shade! Also, be sure if you bother a store to use their restroom, buy something!

Main parking lot in Garden of the Gods. This allows easy walking or bike riding access to multiple viewpoints within the center of the park. Plus there are restrooms!

Mesa and Cache la Poudre park behind the COS Fine Arts Center. This area will be one of the best action spots as well as with Santa Fe Trail so close, you have easy access to multiple viewpoints along Cascade Ave, as well as an easy way to get to the Midland trail into Old Colorado City by way of pedestrian bridge.

See the most action: This is a tough one! There will be multiple places where it will get a little "cheeky" as USA Pro Challenge announcer Phil Liggett would say.

Ridge Road Climb. This will be the first climb for the racers, and they have to climb it 4 times.

Mesa Road Climb. This is a great viewpoint that overlooks the Garden as well as welcomes the riders up a hill.

Intersection of 30th, 31st streets and Pikes Peak. If this is the projected route, there will be a lot of action going on here with riders going into and coming from the Garden.

Sharp and fast turn off of Cascade Ave near Mesa and Cache la Poudre. There is a nice park here, easy access to parking across the creek and within bike ride distance of bathrooms in the park.

Tejon south of Platte. This area will serve as a "sprint" section as well as the finish with the awards ceremony to follow. Also near the festival, day-of festival events, and BEER!

Most Scenic:

Mesa road overlooking the Garden of the Gods

Small pull off right after the main parking lot in GOG overlooking the back side of Kissing Camels.

Lake Ave. looking west towards the Broadmoor. Catch the riders 2-3 times as they pass the Broadmoor in the background.

If they allow it, hang out on the balcony of Garden of the Gods visitor's center. They have food, bathrooms and an amazing view of the riders coming out of Garden of the Gods.

Other suggestions:

-There are tons of great pull offs inside the Garden of the Gods to sit at, they might not allow cars in there the day of so ride a bike!

-Grab a seat with a view in one of the many downtown bars or restaurants! (Phantom Canyon, Blondies, Cowboys to name a few)

-Sit near a big screen TV! This is one of my favorite things to do because then you can see the entire race televised and not miss any of the action while you're waiting for them to come back around!

-Click here for the TV schedule of coverage.

-Click here for the online Tour Tracker! Take the action with you on your smart phone wherever you are!

-Click here for more info about the route including parking.

-Get their EARLY! If the race starts at 12:50pm, I have no doubt that before or around 10am, die hard fans will start to camp out at their spot.

A few months ago, I started hearing buzz from our local trail and open space advocacy groups about a new trail that was going to be built. The mountain this trail will be built on has a lot of controversy surrounding it, and has always been known as a "missing link" of sorts. It was a key component to connecting two major recreational areas, Red Rock Canyon Open Space and the Paul Intemann Memorial Nature Trail which ends near the Incline. Now, a few years after the controversy has settled, the Iron Mountain Trail will be built. It's almost finished to be exact, builders hope to see it done within a week. The Manitou Cats group has been one to lead the charge in making this trail possible. Other groups have also stepped in to help including Friends of the Peak and Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates.

Proposed "Iron Mountain Trail"

Continuing to hear buzz about the Iron Mountain Trail, I noticed they had quite a few work days coming up and, since I've never built a new trail, thought it would be cool to help! Not only is it good to learn about trail building but being one of the first people on a new trail is exciting! Breaking ground on something that hundreds and thousands of people will hike or bike on is a feat to be proud of. I admire the folks that spend so much time maintaining our trails, time which is mostly behind the scenes. Hikers must think there is a "magical trail fairy" that just magically "takes care of the trails". I mean, sure! How else do trails such as the Incline stay in tip top shape (and that's when it was ILLEGAL!) if it wasn't for secret trail fairies? No, contrary to popular belief, there are actual people out there improving, fixing, even building trails for YOU. Now here's the kicker...what if there weren't. That's right, the City can't afford all of that maintenance even if it is considered a "city park" like North Cheyenne Canyon, a friend's group maintains most of the trails. The "Friend's groups" are made up of mostly all volunteers that dedicate a lot of time to meetings, trail building, maintenance and clean up, and they need you.

Pick a tool, any tool! The trails aren't going to build themselves!

Personally, I get great satisfaction just hiking trails. For starters, every trail is different, beautiful and inspiring in it's own way but after helping to clean or maintain a trail...the satisfaction is out of this world! You see the trail in a different light, you learn to value the simple joy a dirt path can bring, you build camaraderie with your trail-building peers and...you get satisfaction in completing a job well done!

It might have been only 30 feet that our crew of 8 got done, but breaking new ground is tough stuff!

Let me get off the soap box to now honestly state that this is only my 3rd time helping maintain or build a trail. After saying that, I feel embarrassed of my lack of help knowing that many of these folks spend 2 hours every-other Wednesday, or every Sunday or heck, almost every DAY working on the trails! This is where the shift needs to happen. It needs to happen with a lot of us, and here's why:

The (trail) torch is being passed. Grab it. Friend's groups and memberships are dwindling and current board members or volunteers are aging. Some groups have had "revivals" such as the Stewards of Stratton Open Space or even forced to close up shop such as the Intemann Trail Comittee. Newsletter lists of these groups reach upwards of 100's of people yet only a handful of them show up to help. It's time younger adults (30's and 40's) start helping more.

It's time we start giving back. How many hours a month do you spend on the trails, in a park or an open space? Now how many hours do you spend volunteering to help maintain those same areas you use? Think of trail volunteering like a car, or a bike. You are using it, so...aren't you going to put in the time and effort to keep it running? Start with a few hours every month to donate.

The trails belong to everyone. Sure, there are tons of friend's groups and mountain bike groups, and city volunteering programs and groups like UpaDowna but you know what? We ALL use the trails. You don't have to "join a club" to help. Take the initiative to check out their sites and join a work day, or even better...become a crew leader.

Do it for the future. I built a trail today that my son can enjoy with his mountain biking or trail running or hiking friends when he's older. Who knows, maybe even my grandkids can enjoy it! I DID THAT. It might have only been 20-30 feet of trail but it felt damn good and you can be damn sure that I'll be back to do it again.

For more info, check out the volunteer calendar on the Trails and Open Space Coalition site. Or, join a Friend's group in the area you utilize the most (click on one below). Can't find yours? Just Google "friends of (enter park name here)" and most likely something will show up!

Ever get that happy-go-lucky, nothing-can-make-me-sad-today feeling? Welcome to your happy place! For me, most of the time, my happy place is in the outdoors. As an athletic woman who enjoys many sports, I was struggling with the "right" kind of happy place. Being an outdoor enthusiast and a co-founder of an outdoor adventure non-profit, I felt that I had to be in the out-of-doors to get a "proper" workout. It seemed wrong to be in a gym even though I've been a gym rat for 15+ years because of volleyball and teaching physical education. So recently, I found that making the excuse "I should be outside getting a workout" wasn't working at all. I wasn't working out outside. I didn't find joy in running in the cold anymore. I couldn't find a good time to ride mountain bikes with friends. I started to get lazy and depressed. Then three opportunities came into my life.

1) Give it 100.com- I randomly found this site while surfing Facebook during one of my lazy stints. There was a story from Huffington Post about a woman that had been working out for 100 days straight and had documented every day by video. She was very inspiring and I was intrigued by this site. I immediately went to GiveIt100.com and checked it out. There were hundreds of people documenting their goals to "Give it 100". Some were learning how to juggle, unicycle, ski and much more! This was the first step, getting me motivated to work out for at least 30 minutes a day, for 100 days, no matter what the activity, indoors or out.

2) OrangeTheory Fitness- I had received a phone call from a friend. She told me she needed me to go with her to try a new workout. Usually, this friend and I go to the Manitou Incline together. Not today. We would be traveling 62 miles to this workout. What? And it was indoors. WHAT? I was a little skeptical and at first and didn't want to go. Again, I was telling myself that I needed to be outside to get a workout. But this wasn't what I should be doing. Forcing myself to "get outside for a workout" made it feel like that's all I was doing, I wasn't able to enjoy the outdoors anymore because I felt pressured to get my sweat on. Time to try something new. So...off we drove. After an hour, we arrived at the Highlands Ranch location of Orangetheory Fitness outside of Denver, CO. Immediately I was excited. The inner gym rat in me was free. This gym was everything I needed and I didn't even know it yet. Treadmills (or as I call them...dreadmills), rowing machines, a small weight room and a coach. We grabbed a dreadmill, excuse me...treadmill and started warming up. Being new to the whole thing, I had no idea what was going on but caught on quickly. All participants started at the same time, half on the treadmills, half in the weight room. The coach made his way around the room (they use a very good speaker system so you can hear them wherever you are), to let us know our first instructions. Treadmills performed about 25 minutes of various speeds including "walking", "base pace", "push pace" and "all-out". I ran over 3 miles during this workout so I was quite pleased. I had to get over the fact that I did it on a treadmill and not outside but at least I was moving my body. After we were done, we moved into the weight room and performed our first block of exercises with weights, a Bosu Ball and TRX straps. Each block has about 5-6 different exercises in it and after 3 weight training blocks, we were spent. We had done numerous full-body activities in about an hour. Brilliant! It was fast paced but I could control my speed and weights. The coach was motivating but not pressuring me and in only an hour, I felt like I do after my hardest outdoor workouts, ready for a shower and a nap! The reason why it's called "Orangetheory" is because you wear a heart rate monitor that keeps track of the times your heart rate is in the "orange" zone. The goal being to produce 12-20 minutes of training at 84% or higher of your maximum heart rate and if you burn 600-1000 calories during the workout, you'll burn 200-400 more during the next 24-36 hours. Not to mention also an increase in energy immediately and improvements in weight/cardio in under 6 months! I went ahead and got a membership to the Colorado Springs location that day. I let myself relax and get over the fact that it was a gym. I justified the membership fee because it's worth it to me to be able to work out with a friend, have a motivating coach and get a full body workout in one hour so I'm ready for anything the outdoors might give me!

At Orangetheory, a coach explains our heart rate results.

3) 9 Round Fitness & Kickboxing- On the opposite side of town, and opposite side of the workout spectrum is 9Round. This is a 30 minute workout that also focuses on some weight training as well as kickboxing techniques. This is my go-to workout when I am crunched for time. A typical day at 9Round looks like this: drop off son at school at 8am, get to 9Round at 8:05, start session, 8:35 get on with my day. Yeah, that's right, I can start "late" at 8:05 because they do not have a class schedule. They have hours that they are open but you are free to start anytime. Essentially, sessions start every three minutes. Starting at "Round 1" a coach helps get you on the right track and you warm up with some jump rope, plyos, or other strength building skill to get the heart moving. At the end of 3 minutes, you perform a "group exercise" in the middle of the gym. A coach leads this and motivates you through the exercise. After that, you move onto the next rounds with instructions from the coach. Rounds 1 and 2 are strength training, 3-8 are a variety of kickboxing bags for you to punch, kick, bob and weave your way through to Round 9 which is dedicated to core workouts. At the end of the rounds, a boxing bell beckons your attention with a "1 ring= good workout, 2 rings= great workout and 3 rings= you kicked my butt". I go with three rings every time!

Every "round" is filled at 8am in 9 Round.

Doing activity in a gym ensures that I will be in better shape to just enjoy the outdoors again. And to allow my trail to be just that, a trail, and not my gym. One constant that brings working out in the gym and outdoors to the same level is that no matter what physical activity I'm doing; activities with UpaDowna, trail running, mountain biking, snowboarding, Orangetheory or 9Round, when I'm active, I'm happy and that's the only thing that matters.

Wherever your happy place may be...

She also has experience with event planning, sales and retail at a local running shoe store, bike shop and has coached volleyball for 6 years. Her favorite activities still include volleyball which she has played since she was 12, her newly found love of trail running, mountain biking on her 29er and bouldering. She intends to introduce her son to all things outdoors so that he can enjoy it as much as she has (with a little volleyball on the side!). Thanks to information provided by the fine folks at UpaDowna, Backpacker Magazine just ran an article about the "Best Hikes To Beer" from around the nation. It should be in the newest edition, August?

Although we are SUPER stoked that they mention our great local hangouts, they failed however to mention where they got the information from and didn't give UpaDowna a shout-out. At least our little town, hike and hangout is NATIONAL! How cool is that?…

5k. It’s the Springs’ ONLY “women only” race. It takes place in lovely MontVal (Monument Valley) Park in downtown Colorado Springs.

For the Women- It’s an early one, starting at 7:30am, but that way it’s not too hot! Plus, after the race I’d like
to invite the Women of UpaDowna and Pikes Peak Sports to a breakfast and mimosas somewhere
downtown! Get to know each other and who knows, get crazy and plan a
girl’s (camping) night out! I hope you’ll join me for the Springs’ ONLY
Women’s only race…Zooma
can go back to Denver with their “Women’s Race Series” and the “ultimate in girls
weekend running” which just so happens to be the same day, but at the
Broadmoor. Oh, and BTW…MEN are allowed to race in Zooma. What kind of
crap is that? No offense men, but this “Women’s Race Series” boasts an
inspirational message of “Imagine a powerful sea of women on the
move-encouraging fellow runners and celebrating personal running
triumphs. Picture a post-race party and expo all wrapped up in one
memorable “after-party expo” where these strong goal-oriented women
come together for well-deserved partying and pampering.” No guy I know
would want to be a part of that. Ok, I lied, maybe a few I know. But
c’mon, every finisher gets a custom designed silver necklace? Men? I
just don’t get it. Why call it a Women’s race and allow men to do it
too? I love ya guys but not enough to let you race in my all-women’s
race. That’s why I’m sticking to my Women’s Distance Festival!

For the Men- You can be involved too! The WDF stresses that ONLY men can volunteer to help at the race plus you get a FREE shirt! And the race director will dress to
impress! The last two shirt logos were:

“I Love Fast Women”

and

“I like to run, I like girls, I like girls who run”

To volunteer, head into The Colorado Running Company at 833 N. Tejon and ask for the volunteer sign-up
sheet. Women, you can also head
into CRC and register for the race there as well!
