How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? It’s been a long, gradual process over the last five years. Running used to be a miserable chore - I always liked the idea of it, but rarely enjoyed it in practice. Then, about 4 years ago I had an emergency operation related to Crohn’s disease that left me struggling to walk for several months. I would hobble from park bench to park bench getting sad watching the runners zoom by. After recovering, I decided that if I could run, I shouldn’t take it for granted. While that is easier said than done, the shift in mindset was all I needed - running gradually changed from a chore to a healthy hobby to something I adore.

Tell us about your best running experience. When I lived in Boston, a large group of friends and I would dress up for a series of 5k races held every quarter. From elves to lederhosen to leprechauns, the outfits were fun and ridiculous (I like to think that people were laughing with us, not at us). It was a whole lot of fun with great people - some racing competitively and others just trudging slowly towards the beer at the finish line. Everybody pushed themselves in their own way while always having a blast.

That, and I really adore running in slot canyons. There is a strange ethereal beauty about them that I can’t get enough of. I once did an overnight run/hike through Buckskin Gulch and the Paria River along the Utah/Arizona border, with a side hike to the Wave, a spectacular rock formation. The gulch gradually turned from a narrow winding slot canyon, into a much deeper and wider ravine with sheer monolithic walls. Along the way I was forced to play a game of chicken with a rattlesnake that had fallen in, and found out the hard way that I consume far more water than most, but loved every minute of it and can’t wait to go back.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The settings of the races are gorgeous on all counts. The three races are very different from each other, which keeps it varied and interesting. I’m a big fan of staying motivated through incremental progress, and the TCR fits that mantra perfectly - each race is more challenging than the last.

Why do you run? I like to get out and see the world around me. For me, running is simply the healthiest and most enjoyable way to do it. In the short term, runner’s high is real, and in the long term I’ve seen major benefits to my overall health - my Crohn’s disease is significantly easier to manage than it used to be. I also find it relaxing in general. When running, I have time to think. When sitting on the couch, I have time to overthink.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I get bored easily, so I’m lucky there are so many options around here. The one route I never get bored of, though, is a 10-11 mile loop combining Red Rocks Canyon Open Space with Section 16. It’s extremely varied - even the soil and rocks change color multiple times. You get rolling hills, long straight stretches, banked curves, rock hopping, a steep climb, and a glorious long smooth downhill gallop. One mile you feel like you’re in the desert, the next in an alpine forest.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? My dog Betty is the best dog in the world, hands down. Fortunately, I don’t have to leave her behind to enjoy one of my other favorite things - Colorado Springs has a lot of dog friendly breweries. My other hobbies include cooking, hiking, snowshoeing, traveling and volunteer work.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I always thought I hated running. A friend talked me into signing up for a 5k with her back in 2009, so I somewhat trained for that, managed to get through the race, and then refused to run anymore. Then a couple years later I found out about a group that runs (or walks) in honor of fallen servicemembers, and as I was a military spouse at the time that really resonated with me. It gave me a purpose to running that was outside of myself and suddenly I was running every week, and eventually joined the group in training for and running my first half-marathon. But then I moved and lost the group support, and running became sporadic again for a few years. Then I moved to Colorado in 2014 and found the incredible running community here, and really fell in love with running!

Tell us about your best running experience. Running the Garden of the Gods 10 Miler for the first time. It was the most beautiful race I'd ever done and made me feel so strong. I never would've thought I'd be capable of running that type of course but I did it!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? It's such a good way to keep me motivated and on top of my training over the summer, and the races make you feel like a badass.

Why do you run? To stay fit, enjoy the outdoors, and challenge myself. Oh, and spend time with friends...because almost all my friends are runners.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Garden of the Gods, both roads and trails. You can run in it every day and it never looks exactly the same.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I love to read, cook & bake, cuddle with my cat, and binge too much Netflix.

Brian McCarrie, 49, Lead Web Developer at The Gazette
How long have you been a runner and how did you get started?I've been running for about 30 years. I started as a Junior in college because my roommate was a runner and I had some friends on the track team so I figured I give it a try. My roommate gave me his old running shoes and out the door I went.
Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience by far was several summers ago before the Waldo Canyon Fire. I was running the Waldo Canyon trail with a friend on a wet and cloudy day. Running by the creek in Waldo that day I felt like I was somehow transported to a rainforest. There were ferns and it was so green. Every time I'd run past or brush up against a low hanging branch drops of water would go flying everywhere. Because we live in such a dry climate days like the one I had in Waldo are few and far between. I felt like I was one with nature and I truly appreciated the experience. It was really special and I'll never forget it.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? Again, years ago when I first moved to town I started to participate in some of the local 5 and 10Ks. A co-worker of mine at the time had signed up for the Pikes Peak Ascent and was going to pick up his race packet and he invited me along on our lunch break. What I saw there was just such a cool vibe. I guess that I expected it to be packed with "elite" runners and there were definitely some but most of the people there were just like me. I remember saying to my friend "I should be doing this!". The next year I signed up.

Why do you run? I run for a lot of reasons. To stay in shape, to be connected with the outdoors, to be a part of the local running community. But the main reason that I run is because it helps me to sort things out in my head. Sometimes when I am stressed for one reason or another, nothing helps me to figure it all out more so than running. It lifts me up when I'm down and has helped me to cope during very difficult times. No mater what happens to be going through my mind when I come back from a run I feel centered and focused. I have more energy, creativity and an improved attitude all because of running. I run because it's a part of me.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? The Garden of the Gods. I live in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood about a 1/2 mile from the trail in the Garden. I'm in there several times a week early in the morning when nobody else is around and I have the whole park to myself. I've had so many awesome runs in the Garden and I know just about every rock on the trail. The scenery is amazing but the trails are challenging and fun. Other favorite places are Palmer Park and Waldo Canyon back before the fire.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? When I'm not running or working I'm spending time with family or drawing and creating art.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I might have done a Turkey Trot or two in my hometown in New Jersey growing up, but I didn't actually start to try running as a 'thing' until I was in college and my best friend wanted to run at the gym as a break from studying. I remember when I finally started running outside, instead of just on the treadmill, as a senior in college - I could finally do 3 miles continuously! Something about being outside for the run instead of just on the treadmill made it so much easier to run without walk breaks!

Tell us about your best running experience. I've had so many amazing running experiences, from getting to travel to some of the most beautiful parts of Colorado such as Imogene Trail Race, to my first trail almost-marathon (25miles) at Collegiate Peaks Trail Race (which got me started on this long distance running life!) to 'fastpacking'/trail running in to Assiniboine National Park in western Canada . Each time I travel to a new place for a running race or adventure, I'm so thankful for the ability to see all the awe-inspiring sights b/c of my run training.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I love that each part of the series is a totally different challenge- the Garden 10 is one of the very few road races I do each year, so it's fun to see what type of speed I can manage on such a hilly course. The Summer Roundup , no matter the location, always seems to be rolling hills, such that I think I should run 'hard' but after a few miles I start to wonder how I can possibly do ultra-marathons when an hour is so difficult! And then of course the final challenge of climbing up a local mountain- it's the perfect test of your fitness as well as race strategy- did I save up enough energy for the top? Or should I use the energy lower down because I won't be moving fast at the top anyways!?
Why do you run? To see beautiful places that would take really long to get to by walking, and are too steep to bike!
Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I love the trails in Cheyenne Canon because it's easier to get up to higher altitudes for the cooler temperatures , as well as to escape the crowds.
When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I'm also a member of the Naked Women's Racing Team, so if there's a wknd that I'm not running, it's only because I'm biking instead! Weekdays I like to head to CityRock with my husband Dennis b/c that's a sport that we can do together no matter what level each of us is currently at.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Dabbled a little in high school but started running regularly 25 years ago. It was an easy workout to get in during my lunch hour while my daughter was little and then just kept on running.

Tell us about your best running experience. It’s going to be the 2018 Barr Trail Mountain Race. I’ve DNF’d the last two years so this year I’m going to earn that shirt!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The Triple Crown is a great series that pushes you in each race. I was always afraid of the Pikes Peak Ascent, so I decided for my 50th year on earth I would sign up for the series. This year will be my third year and I plan on running the Triple Crown until I can’t. I’m super excited about the Summer Roundup being down at Cheyenne Mountain State Park this year – another one of my favorite parks.

Why do you run? I love to be outside to explore tunnels, old cabins and whatever else is out there and running gets me to those places. I want to be a Forest Ranger in my next life.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Close to home would be Garden of the Gods. It’s a different park every day, every hour. If I have more time it would be all the trails on Pikes Peak, so many miles and places to go.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Hike with my family, snuggle with Hyndi and Remi our dogs, take pictures, learn to ride my new mountain bike, anything outside.

Sharon Greenbaum, 55, group fitness instructor YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started?I have been a runner for 40 years, i started in high school when I was cut from the other sports I tried back then.

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experiences, outside a few memorable races, are on Pikes Peak. One memory is running on longs ranch road with my dog, Sky, on a mild winter day and watching her enjoy the bounding through snow drifts and chasing squirrels. Then she’d wait majestically for me, looking down at me from some rock or ridge, check up on me, and move on...so in the moment and having a great time and making me feel like she always had my back out there.
Another is running with friends to Elk Park, so beautiful, and spreading my fathers ashes in lovely places enroute, as he requested us to do. These memories also remind me life is short! Enjoy your legs and your lungs while they can still carry us to these places, and when you go slow, you see more!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I am drawn to participating in the triple crown of running because life gets so busy with work, family obligations, and busy-ness that, next thing you know, you just aren’t making the space in life to get out and do anything new or different. Entering the Triple Crown in the summers allows me to reconnect with old faces and meet new ones, all while doing something healthy. Each race builds you up slow for the next one, and that helps hold you accountable in your training.
Why do you run? I run, jog, and hike to get outside and enjoy the beauty and the fresh air of my surroundings and to clear my head. It’s at least as much about my mental health as it is about my physical health these days...
Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? My favorite places to run are many of the beautiful parks we have at easy access here in colorado springs, but when it come right down to it, i just love going out my front door for a run, jog, or walk and enjoying the simplicity of that!

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do?When not running or working, i’m mostly a homebody! I read, cook and clean, watch movies. I enjoy art and crafts, gardening, being with my pets, family, friends. I travel here and there, even if it’s just to Denver to see my daughter or down to Alamosa for a cross country or track reunion, sometimes further on a plane. I don’t like to leave home and my pets for too long, though!

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I have been running for 10 years. My mom suggested I join the cross country team my freshman year of high school and I have been running ever since!

Tell us about your best running experience. When I ran my first half marathon. I ran the Disney World 1/2 marathon to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. I ran in honor of my brother, Michael, who had Hodgkin Lymphona.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? My stepfather passed away in November and everyone from Achilles was and has been so supportive. Brandon and Melissa suggested that I do the Triple Crown. I thought it would be a great experience.

Why do you run? It makes me feel really good and it is something that is mine. It helps me think and I love getting to see different things when I run especially here in Colorado!

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I recently started trail running and I really enjoy running at Cheyenne Mountain. I love the scenery.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Forty years. I started while I was a senior at Manitou Springs High School. My friend, Steve Louden and I began running early in the mornings on the trails behind our homes in Cascade. I think we were running about a mile and I threw up almost every morning. It was great!

Tell us about your best running experience. This is a hard one. Runs can be great because you’re braving adverse weather conditions and feel like the only crazy person in the world! They can be great when you encounter wildlife or fresh vistas on an, as yet, unexperienced trail, when you have a fun social run with friends or achieve a hard fought personal best. Running off trail on a high plateau in the shadow of Cotopaxi in Ecuador is certainly memorable. Running up on an elk in Cheyenne Mountain State Park is something I’ll never forget. Getting caught up in a flock of mating turkeys (10 males and 20 females) in Cheyenne Mountain State Park recently is something I’d rather not talk about. Training for the Ascent, circa 2001, with a bunch of women, provided some interesting discussions I wish I could forget.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? Absolutely nothing. As with most of my racing experiences, I get roped into them by some well-meaning friend (at least I choose to assume it’s all well-meaning). Steve Louden got me started doing the Ascent to celebrate turning 40. He was perfectly happy to do two races, while my personality leaves me stuck doing the race for years. Now that Tim Bergsten has roped my into doing the Triple Crown, I’ll probably be stuck with it for years to come. I need a more sedate group of friends!

Why do you run? Partially to stay in shape for other activities like skiing and mountain climbing, for the joy of being outside and enjoying nature, but mostly because it offers a wonderfully controlled environment in which I can talk to (at) my wife, as she has difficulty breathing and talking at the same time.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I was afraid you were going to ask this. I’m reticent to share this privileged information, as the quiet trails I gravitate to might be ruined if I advertise them. You may guess from my earlier comments that I like Cheyenne Mountain State Park. My wife and I put down the first tracks in the snow on the south side of the park the day it opened while fellow AdAmAn member Wally Wininger ran on the North side of the park that morning. Since they don’t allow dogs in the park, there’s a lot of wildlife. I already mentioned seeing an elk. We’ve also seen bobcats, bears, rattlesnakes, and many, many turkeys, deer and prairie dogs. It’s also less crowded than many other locations in the area. Whatever you do, don’t run there… with all that wildlife, I’m sure you’ll find it way too dangerous!

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Ski, mountain climb, travel with my wife and volunteer with a number of local organizations. I’m currently President of the AdAmAn Club, Vice President of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Historical Association, on the Board of Directors of Barr Camp, a member of the Advocates for the Pikes Peak Summit House and a member of the Penrose Heritage Museum, PPHCEM Committee (Pikes Peak Experience).

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I started running in 2001. I had decided to join the Army Reserves because I needed college money, and my recruiter told me that if I joined the reserves I would be able to build schools and hospitals for small children in third world countries. I had to be able to run 2 miles in a certain amount of time to pass the PT test. I have been running off and on for 16 years.

Tell us about your best running experience.

Um, well, I have had several. It is difficult to pinpoint just one experience because there are so many great experiences!!My first runner's high was in Basic Training. We had to run the 5 miles as sort of a right of passage at the end of basic training. I was very excited to see if I could actually run 5 miles because that distance seemed so far. Oh my goodness! I still remember feeling like I was flying and that I was the happiest person ever created! I think I had a smile on my face the entire day after that run, and I probably had to do extra pushups for being so smiley. Before that, the only time I ever felt that amazing was when I was singing on stage in high school and college. I knew after that run that I was going to continue running. A "cardio junkee" was truly born that day.

My first half marathon ever was in Amsterdam, and that was amazing! I was also able to run a 5K in Egypt and that was just so cool! I have been fortunate to be able run in 7 different countries and each experience was pretty amazing!

Returning to running a half marathon 8 months after my kiddo was born was quite an experience too! I had a very difficult delivery and my recovery was nowhere near as easy as I had hoped it would be. That race hurt, and all I could think of was my kiddo and how if I ran faster I would get to see his little face again. That changed my running perspective a little bit. I may have cried a little at the end of that race.

I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon and that was likely the most fun run I have ever done. I'm a total nerd and I love themes and costumes, and being in the happiest place on earth whilst running is quite an amazing experience!!!

I ran the Super Half here in Co Springs in February of this year. It was my first half marathon in over 4 years. The Super Half this year really re-energized and re-charged me. A couple of lovely friends met me during the last 5K of the race and they ran in with me to the finish. I came across the finish line and another dear friend of mine was there with a giant hug for me, telling me he was proud of me. I can't even begin to describe that feeling. It was much bigger and so much deeper than the "runner's high." I felt like I had finally come back to the sport that I love so much. It was a good thing that I had on sunglasses that day, because I had tears again.

I could go on and on. I really love running. In short, I can say that if the run includes me getting my runner's high, and ends in me with tears, it is usually an amazing run experience!!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I decided last year that I was going to make a "grand return" to running after a 3ish year hiatus of just doing my 2 mile army PT tests. I wanted to do the most BA thing I could think of so I decided to commit to the Ascent. One day, the Mighty Marmots page came across my Facebook newsfeed and I suddenly became obsessed. I found the Mighty Marmots on the Pike Peak Sports page, and I saw so many people who were on the Mighty Marmots team and immediately I was impressed and intimidated by these awesome folks. I learned about the Triple Crown on the Pikes Peak Sports page as well. I decided that if I was going to do something that would scare me and challenge me, that I had to do the Triple Crown. The registration this year was also on my birthday so I decided to take that as a sign that it was meant to be.

Why do you run? Running is the one thing that I can do that no one can take from me. I run to stay sane, to solve problems, to have serious talks with myself. I run to take myself to see beautiful, breathtaking sights. I run to ensure that I can keep myself physically healthy for years to come. I run so that my son sees his mommy pursuing fitness, both physically and mentally. I run because it makes me giggle. I run because it dries my tears. I run to pray, and to feel close to the God that I choose to believe in. I run to run away from things and to run to things. I run to over come obstacles. I run to feel better about myself when the rest of my world seems like it is crashing down. I run to celebrate myself when I overcome those obstacles. I run because I just love it.... I can't explain it as accurately as I feel about it. I run because it renders me speechless.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why?

Red Rock Open Space is gorgeous! I adore red rocks and water, and the trails are just fun there!

I also love to run at Garden of the Gods at sunrise! The beauty of the sun coming up to say good morning to the world is comparable to none.

I also love to run in Cheyenne Canon. Spring Creek to Columbine is one of my favorite routes. I also really enjoy going up Buckhorn and turning left. Ha! that is my elaborate description of it. I love how different the trails are in Colorado Springs! Chances are if I run a trail here, it will become my favorite until I run a new trail and that becomes my favorite.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Oh dear! I am always fearful of how to answer this question. I like a little bit of everything so here goes......

I am part of this amazing organization called WMBA of COS. Its a mountain biking group for women in Colorado Springs. They actually let me be on the board of directors and I got the honor to be the Board Chair this year! If I am not running on trails I am riding on my mountain bike with these incredible ladies.

I love to read. Sci-Fi, fantasy and history are my favorite genres.

I love Star Wars and I am moved to tears at times because of how amazing it is. I can recite every line from the original movies, which is clearly a talent. My love of Science fiction runs deep. I am also a Trekkie. Love Capt Jean Luc Picard!!

I love to wear costumes, any time of the year, like a random Tuesday just because I didn't want to wear regular clothes.

I have to be in the mountains so you will often find me disappearing for the weekend. I love to camp so much that as I am typing this answer I am feeling the urge to go and sleep under the stars.

I love spending time with my family. We tend to spend most of our time in the mountains and traveling to fun places for bike races and/or running races. Its so cool to travel to small places off-the-beaten-path and explore! We love to hike and find waterfalls.

I used to be an aspiring Opera singer, so you may find me at Johnny's Navajo Hogan belting out some tunes on Wednesday for karaoke. I won't sing the Opera there though. I'm a soprano and I don't want to break the windows ;o)

I have a degree in Exercise Science because health and wellness is such a passion of mine. I am currently pursuing a Health and Wellness Coaching Certification so I am doing lots of homework and reading for that. I also teach a mean Indoor Cycling class. When I finish this active duty tour in a year, I'm planning to go back to health and wellness, so I do what I can to keep all of my certifications current. I love exercise, and I love helping people to reach their fitness and wellness goals.

I love to learn new things.

More than anything I love to spend time with my 6 year old. He is magnificent. You will often find me on a trail with a light saber in hand fighting off Sith Lords with my kiddo. Or we will be donning our best Harry Potter gear and casting spells on each other at a local park. Its the best thing ever!!

Other than the stuff I listed, I will add tacos and beer. Because tacos and beer are amazing and wonderful.

After reading all of my answers to these questions, I realize that I really like to over use the words, "Amazing," and, "Wonderful."

Last, but not least, COFFEE. All things coffee. I don't need it, because I am hyper enough already, but COFFEE makes my life fully complete.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I have been a runner all of my life. It started by chasing and being chased on the playground. I started running middle school track because it sounded fun. I ran two years in middle school, plus four years of cross country, swimming, and track and field in high school. Ran in college. CU Boulder for one year. After a bad car accident, I transferred to UCCS and ran there for two years before medical issues caused me to drop out of school. I took some time off of running. Then I started working at Boulder Running Company with Cody and Lori Hill. Ran a bit while I worked there. Then I started coaching and ran regularly with my athletes for the next 15 years.

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience is also one of my more frustrating experiences. I was training with the HART team and I was having a lot of racing success and I was the most fit I had been since college. It was 2013 and I was running the American Discovery Trail Marathon. My goal was to run sub 3 hours. So my pace for the first 6 miles was 6:40. At mile 6, I rolled my foot in some very loose dirt that was used to fill in the trail after a big rain storm and felt a pop in my foot. My foot hurt, but not too badly so I slowed to 7-minutes per mile and continued. About mile 10-11, the sharp pain started. Long story short, I finished the marathon. It turned out I had a complete fracture in my 2nd metatarsal. I was happy with my race, I placed 6th with a time of 3:28.18, which was my fastest marathon at that point. Although my time and place were good, what makes this the best running experience is due to the support of the amazing running community. There were countless people along the course and in the race that offered support and cheered me on. I always knew Colorado Springs was a great running community, but there are times you take those things for granted. This was an opportunity for me to see what this community has to offer. I am so thankful for all the runners, volunteers, race directors, media, etc that support running and healthy living in our area. I am so proud to be part of that community!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I grew up in the area and I have only completed the Triple Crown one time. In high school and college, my coaches would not let us run the Ascent or Marathon because they were after the official seasons had already started. Now I am able to do the full series and I am able to train so that I can finish and still be able to walk when I am done. I will be attempting the marathon this go around and it is my opportunity to do something I never thought I could do.

Why do you run? My answer now is sooo much different than it would have been 15 years ago. I run for peace, health, and the community/friendship it creates.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Santa Fe Trail, Colorado College and anywhere from there. I meet a group of friends there every week. They hold me accountable, are my biggest cheerleaders, and I truly love that time with them. We catch up on what is going on in our lives and discuss our goals (career, personal and training)

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy cooking and sewing.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I started running in late Dec. 2015, a week before the Rescue Run on January 1, 2016 to be exact. My wife, Shae Comstock, has known Vannesa Shawver for some time and while we were out for drinks with Vannesa and Andy Shawver, they convinced us to join the brewers cup. We really did not know what we were getting into at the time, but we made the decision to join. You can read more about the story here http://www.pikespeaksports.us/profiles/blogs/206lbs-and-a-run-club

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience in my short running career was the Super Half Marathon in 2017. Setting out to complete a half marathon was a big goal considering at the time that I set it, the longest I had run at one given time was seven miles. I did not doubt that I could do it, but making that leap into the unknown was a little scary.I ran the race with the mindset that I was going to run 9:30-minute miles and if I felt pretty good half way through I would shoot for 9-minute miles. My trusty Strava was reading out my mile times 9:15, 9:09, 9:22, 9:14 and I was suprised how good I was feeling. I was not fatigued and still had plenty of energy. Half way through I was averaging 8:50 miles and maintained that to the end. That race gave me the confidence that I could complete longer distances as long as I put my mind to it.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? In November of 2016 I decided that I was going to run the Pikes Peak Ascent. When I started researching the race I also found the Garden of the Gods 10-mile race. I read about the Garden of the Gods 10-mile and thought I could do that race as well and that eventually led me to the Triple Crown of Running page. I just needed to run one more race to complete the series so it was an easy decision to register for all three.

Why do you run? I run because it keeps me healthy and I enjoy it. I like the social aspect of it. I have met so many people since joining the Brewer's Cup and have made new friends. I now go out running on a regular basis with these friends and running with friends is much better than running by myself. When I am out running I find myself out in la-la land just enjoying the scenery, taking everything in and think to myself that how lucky I am that I get to do this.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? My favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area are the the trails near Manitou Springs. As a regular attendee of the Incline Club I am constantly running/hiking/walking Barr Trail, Intemann Trail/Section 16 Loop, Rampart Range Road, Ute Indian Trail and Garden of the Gods.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Wait there is more to life then working and running? During the summer months our family is booked solid from May to September with camping, vacations (and yes some vacations involve running), riding our ATVs and just enjoying what Colorado has to offer. Winter months we wind down, but with three kids we are always busy with some activity.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I ran track in HS, but didn't really start thinking of myself as a runner until 2006. Had run the BolderBoulder a couple of times, but that year I felt really good doing it and decided to sign up for another race. Then I just kept signing up for races.

Tell us about your best running experience. Recently - the Behind The Rocks 30k. I am just getting back into running after surgery and chemo to treat ovarian cancer. Friends were doing the race and convinced me I could as well. It was the longest trail run I had ever done and it was amazing! I ran with great friends (including Katie Benzel!) and felt great the entire time. It was not easy, but I trained enough and surprised myself with what I was able to do.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series?I have not done the ascent since 2010. I figured it would be a great race to return to for my "comeback" year. I have never done all three races so I figured I better go big and do them all!

Why do you run? It is my happy place. I love being outside and on the trails. The longer the better. And, all my friends do it so if I want to hang out with them, I better do it too.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why Section 16 is my favorite run. It has a nice, hard, steep, uphill followed by a flowing, not too technical, downhill. Now that I am running farther than that on most days, I love adding on parts of the Intemann trail or High Drive.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Along with running I like to bike and swim. I also love to dance. I spend a lot of time reading and enjoy watching baseball and soccer. I am also hoping that I learn to love gardening as that is my summer project!

Tell us about your best running experience. I've had a lot, but Behind the Rocks 30k in Moab, Utah, on March 25 stands out in recent memory. Second of all, I got to run with the amazing Carrie Renaud. I'll let you read her Marmot bio to find out her story, but we were both getting back into shape this spring and I pushed her toward a big goal: her longest trail race ever. We ran the whole thing together. It was one of the best runs I've had during my recovery, and the finish was pretty emotional. I am lucky to have such good friends in the running community.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I decided the Triple Crown would be a fitting goal for my comeback year, and why not throw my hat back into the ring as a repeat Marmot in the process? Postpartum running has been harder than I expected it to be, even though I ran until almost 39 weeks during pregnancy, but working toward these goals keeps me focused and challenged and showing up, even on the hard days. I was due for another Pikes Peak Marathon, too, so why not go big?

Why do you run? Last time I answered this question, I had only been running about three years. This part of my past answer definitely holds true: "Running is life itself on a smaller scale -- successes and failures, ups and downs, trials and errors, stubbed toes, fluids -- and spending time on the trails makes me feel more alive." But now that I have more miles and years under my belt, I know that running is like a good friend - there for you no matter what else is going on, pushing you to be your best, helping you work through the kinks. In the whirlwind of becoming a parent, getting back to running has helped me feel more like myself again. Also... I really like pizza. And beer. And fries. And anything else I can eat while holding an infant in one arm, which usually comes wrapped in a tortilla and doesn't usually score well on the "healthy" scale.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? The whole mess of connectable trails on the west side: Red Rock Canyon, Cheyenne Cañon, and anything on the shoulders of Pikes Peak. There are so many combinations of trails, all of which will whip you into shape. I'm excited for the Missing Link to become official for even more possibilities! It's also wonderfully fun to go get lost in the rabbit warren of trails around Mount Herman. I just love anything where you can point to the mountain skyline and say, "I was up THERE this morning" -- because how cool is that?

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I really like sleep (not that I do much of that these days). Spending time with my husband and our son is my top priority these days, but I also enjoy yoga, hiking, camping, backpacking, and sampling craft beers with friends. In my "spare time." Ha. Haha!

Recap of epic training

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? As a kid I often would throw tantrums and would storm out of the house. I’d run as hard as I could until the weight of my emotions wasn’t as heavy. I’d like to think I’m more controlled these days, but still run for the release and primal freedom it provides. I started racing about 5 years ago, finding the thrill of experiencing new trails/courses and running wild with my buddies!

Tell us about your best running experience. My first Pikes Peak Marathon (2014) was pretty epic due to the energy of all the runners and the amazing support on the mountain. A close second was running The Bridger Ridge Run in Bozeman, Montana. Deemed by Runner’s World as the “Most Raw Exposure” on their best 31 trail races in America list in 2012, I knew I had to check it out. I drove the 11 hours solo, ran the most ridiculous 20ish mile ridge, endured several brutal spills, crossed the finish line feeling broken, camped out in a fellow runner’s backyard, and decided to drive home the next day. I physically had to assist my legs out of the car when stopping to pump gas and grab snacks. It was brutal, but totally worth it!

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The Garden 10 miler was my first race in Colorado Springs, and a stark awakening to the strength of the local running community. I was desperately trying to beat a fierce lady in her 70s and a jack-rabbit of a 10 year old, both of whom were kicking my butt in that race! I recall thinking 'this is just unreal – a sport that unites folks of all ages, genders, backgrounds and personalities.' I fell in love with competing during that race, and continue to be a bit intimidated by the Garden 10miler.

Why do you run? To feel my heart race faster than the darting thoughts in my head!\

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Sonderman Park, because it’s a hidden secret and has some gnarly dirt hills for added pain.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I’m a member of El Paso County Search and Rescue (EPCSAR)! Additionally, I love to snowboard, hike, and camp with my husband, our dogs, and friends. I also love to cook and eat good food!!! Oh, and I’m obsessed with podcasts and audiobooks.

I attended a private university that required students to run a 5K, at the end of each semester. I found it to be crazy at the time, but after walking the first semester and being sore beyond belief, I started running the course. As I would train with friends for the 5K I really started to enjoy the time getting out and seeing my improvement. I have been hooked on the "runner's high" ever since.

Tell us about your best running experience. I really enjoyed training for my first half marathon. I ran the Denver Rock and Roll half in 2013 and absolutely loved the feeling of becoming a stronger runner. I think it was my transition from a casual runner to one with a game face! I was happy about my time, and it ended up giving me the opportunity to qualify for the Pikes Peak Ascent. From that experience I discovered the importance of getting on a good training schedule. Now that I know I have what it takes I always tell my friends, "No more kid stuff."

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The challenge of the Triple Crown has always intrigued me. Training for my first Pikes Peak Ascent last year really motivated me to step up my running game, and I love that the courses require some hard core training. The series is not for the weak! Thinking about the race days that lie ahead have my pumped to lace up and train.

Why do you run? Running is my therapy! It has been the constant in my life to teach me about strength and endurance. It has been the one thing that has reminded me to take time for myself. I love the high I get when I run a faster split, crush a tough hill, or find a new place where I have never run before. I run because I can. I get thrilled to know that I have the ability and desire to run, and my hope is to one day be the old lady who is killing it on race day!

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I love Garden of the Gods! I am pretty much obsessed with running there - mainly because I love it when cars drive by and I'm running. In my head I think they are beyond impressed by my athleticism. Another reason why I love it there is because it is always a challenge. I have to "dig deep" every time I am tackling those long hills. I sing, I yell, I think of Rocky Balboa...whatever it takes, but the road course never gets old to me. I love the beauty that surrounds me while I run there, not to mention the view of Pikes Peak. I love telling the mountain, "I'm coming for ya!"

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I love having parties at my house! I am constantly trying to come up with reasons to have a party, so if you're reading this you are invited! I also love to travel, go to sporting events and concerts, drink cold beer, make new friends, and watch Netflix and Hulu like it's my job.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I guess I would say I've been running for about 12 years now. I decided to sign up for the Air Force Marathon when I got sent to the Air Force Institute of Technology. I did run some prior to that, but just enough to pass my Air Force PT test every year which didn't require a lot.

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience is probably still the TransRockies Run. The six-day, 120-plus mile event from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek was truly just an awesome experience. But my favorite is probably the Big Sur International Marathon.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The Triple Crown Series is just an amazing series of races. All three races are different and challenging in their own right. When I first moved to Colorado Springs, I signed up for the Pikes Peak Marathon to challenge myself. I have a tendency to jump into the deep end when it comes to challenges. The next year, I decided to try the series because I loved training in the Garden of the Gods so much I figured I might as well run the race. The Summer Roundup was definitely an unknown, but I grew to love and hate High Drive. I hope the Summer Roundup moves back to High Drive this year. It always gave me a great sense of accomplishment to be able to run up High Drive and I miss all those people passing me after the turn-around on the way back down.

Why do you run? I run for therapy........really I just enjoy sharing the trails with my running buddies. They are the best!

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? It's hard to narrow it down to one favorite place to run. Colorado Springs and the Front Range have so many great places to run. Road is easy, Garden of the Gods. Trail, I don't know that I can narrow to one. I love Falcon Trail on the USAFA, and Rampart Reservoir, but Red Rocks, Section 16/Palmer Trail, Ute Valley, and Palmer Park are all right up there!

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I like to visit all our local breweries, which of course then leads to more running to try to maintain a healthy weight. So many great places have opened in the past few years. Participating in the PPRR's Inaugural Brewers' Cup and getting to hang out with a great group of beer drinkers with a running problem has been a blast! I've also waded into triathlons this last year, so I do like to spend time on my bikes as well, but I hate swimming!

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I started running in 1997. It all started at a family reunion. We were playing Family Reunion Basketball (no blood, no foul) in St. Louis, Mo. I took off down court for what should have been an easy layup or dunk and my knee blew up on approach. After surgery and months of PT, my brother, who is a physical therapist, suggested I use a stair climber to rebuild the muscles around the knee. A good friend of mine said he knew where a great stair stepper was. He took me to the Incline in December of 1997. And thus began my mountain running career. The first organized race I ever ran was the 2000 Pikes Peak Ascent - go big or go home.

Tell us about your best running experience. Going to have to go with the 2012 Pikes Peak Marathon. This is the first time in any race that I scored some hardware. The field overall was slow, and I had a pretty good day. I wound up third in the 45-49 age group and took in three IVs along with significant oxygen at the medical tent when all was said and done.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I’ve run the Triple Crown in the past. The last time was in 2007. I love running the Pikes Peak races (either Ascent or Marathon), and I train for those races specifically. I am not a fast runner on asphalt or concrete. So while I love the views in the Garden of the Gods, I can’t stand the hard surfaces. So that will be my downfall in this summer’s races.

Why do you run? I love being in the mountains. Running on trails where few people run or even know about is a blast. You see things that can only be seen if you run for miles into the deep woods. My main reason is to stay healthy. I have two kids that are 15 and 12. I would like to be around for all their milestones: graduations, weddings, etc.. Since my kids came rather late in life, running keeps me fit so I can keep up with them.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Hands down, it’s the Incline. It’s the hardest mile in the county and possibly the state. I climb the Incline three-to-four times a week. I pepper long runs with the Incline Club every Sunday and shorter runs in Monument Valley Park.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I love to be with my family. I’ve lived in Colorado Springs since 1966 with a seven-month stint in Greeley to get my Secondary Education Certification. My oldest child is in the marching band at Air Academy High School, and it has been a blast watching this band perform. She has been fortunate to be on a team that has won the state title both years she has been in band. My youngest daughter likes to run and play softball. So I get to run with her in the Kids Fall Series as a mid-pack pacer. She and I also play catch in the backyard. Both my kids like to ski, so we usually hit the slopes four or five times a year. My wife is a musician and writer. We met in college and got married in 1993. She plays harpsicord at the Margarita at Pine Creek once a month. I get to watch her and her ensemble play three or four times a year and it’s really entertaining. She writes Young Adult Fiction currently as a hobby, but will eventually go pro.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I have been running since 2000 when my trusty Norkictrack bit the dust and I purchased a treadmill for my 5 a.m. workouts with taped Oprah shows. I ran on my treadmill nearly daily for years until my friend Lydia invited me to run the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile in 2009, which was the beginning of leaving the 30 minute treadmill only run behind!

Tell us about your best running experience. There are so many BEST running experiences but truly the training in 2009 for the Garden of the Gods 10 mile leading into the ADT Marathon are some of my best memories of getting started with running. A near tie would be all the training runs with my boyfriend, Dave and best friend Susie training to qualify for the 2012 Boston Marathon. I am all about fun training runs to prepare for the races more than the race itself.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The GARDEN. I love love LOVE the GARDEN. The Garden in June, Bear Creek in July and the PEAK in August is the perfect way to round out the summer in our great state. I start with my favorite place and feel the lure of the insanely challenging PEAK, with a bit of comfort in the middle!

Why do you run? I run because I am vain and I want to stay as close to my high school weight as possible. YES it is true, but I also love the feeling of running with my friends and feeling so refreshed and accomplished when we are done.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? The GARDEN - THE GARDEN - THE GARDEN! I love the bunnies darting across the road. I love the birds all around us. I love finding new images in the rocks. I love when the sun comes up and I see the sky changing colors through the various seasons in our beautiful state. I actually love the hills and how accomplished I feel when I get to the top of each one. It took me a year of training to get through the GARDEN without having to walk. I worked on that hill from that main parking lot and thought I would never get to the top without walking. Now I focus on trying to get up the hills with faster cadence and less effort. I try to run the GARDEN once a week unless crazy life gets in the way.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Spend time with my boyfriend, Dave, my great children and my sweet dog. Jess is soon to be 14 and is a mini me. Josh will be 12 by the end of the summer and he is sweet and loving. My golden retriever Rose just turned 10.
How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Back in middle school I was a girl with a dream of being an athlete, but I was hopeless at every sport I tried that involved any sort of coordination! Track was the only team you could be on without trying out - but the catch was, only three people per event got to go to the meets. I had been running mile time trials in PE, and I HATED them! So, ignoring the fact that I was always one of the top finishers, I tried everything NOT to be a distance runner. I tried sprinting, I tried field events (despite that whole no coordination thing.) Needless to say, my seventh-grade track career never made it beyond after-school practices. Discouraged, I almost didn't go out for track in eighth grade. What was the point if I was always going to be the 15th or 16th girl in an event that only took the first three? But in PE, I was still consistently beating everyone in the timed mile. After one of the mile runs early in the spring semester, my PE teacher told me that I'd better be going out for track. I realized I had made a huge mistake the year before ... I was trying a distance that was all wrong for me! I wasn't a sprinter, I was a 400-meter runner! I was still in total denial that I was a long distance runner. But my 400 meter career ended before it even began when I went to the wrong group on the first day track practice and ended up with the 1,600 meter runners. I ran the mile at every track meet that season, qualified for the eighth-grade Meet of Champions (like the Olympics for a girl who had been terrible at every sport she'd tried!), and the rest is history!

Tell us about your best running experience. It's hard to pick my best! One that sticks out is the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon several years ago. A friend and I decided to run the half, so we drove from San Antonio to OKC the day before. The whole weekend was ridiculous...I used to be bad about registering for races at the last minute, so we had to scramble with as few bathroom breaks as possible on the eight-hour trip to get me to the expo before the 5 p.m. cutoff! Then, our attempt at carbo loading ended up being a three-hour wait at a restaurant because it was prom weekend! The following morning, we made it all the way to the course before I realized I forgot my watch...we had to drive all the way back to our hotel to get it. When we got back to the course, the race was already starting, and I hadn't even warmed up yet! I was running for place, and panicking about getting stuck in the back of thousands of runners, so my friend threw me over the gate so I could still be near the front of the runners. Once I finally got going...TWICE I had to stop for traffic (including a semi-truck one of those times!) because police weren't stopping anyone! I was stunned when I got to a turn-around point eight or nine miles in, and saw there was no one near me! This crazy race ended up being my first-ever race to win! I even went under 1:26 for the first time!
What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? To be completely honest, my whole focus this season is the Ascent. An Achilles injury kept me out last year in what would have been my first try. I've set (hopefully not too high!) goals of placing and breaking three hours, and all of my training is centered around hill strength versus more traditional race training. In other words, I'm sort of sacrificing speed in the first two races because I have Ascent tunnel vision! But that said, I think the series sounds AMAZING! I'm excited to get a taste of it this year!
Why do you run? I love it. I love how it makes me feel, mentally and physically. When I still lived in San Antonio, I remember running up a huge hill in this sort of backcountry area in a state park. The hill was exhausting, but when I reached the top and got this amazing view, I realized that the reason I got treated to that view was because I could run. It's given me an ability to see things that many people will never get to. It's become such a part of me, that back when I had knee surgery and couldn't actually run for a few months, I would strap on a vest and deep-water run in a pool for 70, 80, 90 minutes...just so I could still have that daily run, in some way!
Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? Rampart Reservoir. I don't get out there enough, but it is hands down one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado Springs. The pine trees, those inlets you run around, the stream and flowers on the Rainbow Gulch trail leading to the loop. The mountains always in sight. It has everything wonderful about Colorado all in one location. And bonus: because it's over 9,000 feet, you're getting altitude training too!
When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I'm a huge bookworm. Whether it's an actual book, or articles online, I spend every spare moment reading. I'm also a diehard San Antonio Spurs fan (Go Spurs Go!), and follow them VERY closely during the season. I love driving, and I could spend hours on the road listening to music.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I’ve been running since I was a little kid. I had a lot of energy as a child and ran everywhere. All the adults used to make fun of me! Through grade school and high school I played a lot of soccer and basketball. In college I ran to stay in shape. After college I continued to run and started entering a few races. Throughout adulthood, I’ve always moved through periods of training for events and easier times of running casually for fitness. Currently, living on the westside of Colorado Springs, I run often on the amazing trails in Red Rocks Open Space, Garden of the Gods, The Incline, etc.

Tell us about your best running experience. In 2001, I was going through life transitions and ran a marathon in Green Bay, Wis. It was the first time running that distance. It was a beautiful summer day and we ran the neighborhood streets, past Lambeau Field and through the city. It was a great feeling to finish! In 2002, I ran the Colorado Half Marathon in Fort Collins after recently moving here. To run down the Cache La Poudre river in spring and end in Old Town was a great experience for a new transplant to the west. Every day it’s a gift to run right here in Colorado Springs. We have an amazing trails system. Very few cities in our country offer this type of trail running in the city limits.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? These are amazing races. To be able to run the roads of Garden of the Gods, trails in Bear Creek Park and the famous Barr Trail is a gift. I have yet to attempt the Ascent and have always dreamed of participating. I’m also honored to be on the Mighty Marmots, which is supported by PikesPeakSports.us and the Triple Crown of Running. I’ve always loved following this team. The runners are an eclectic group from various backgrounds and abilities. It’s really exciting to be a part of it.

Why do you run? I run for sanity, balance, fitness, nature, etc. Through many life changes, it is the one activity I have always used to take care of myself. Even during the busiest work periods or stressful times, I’m always looking for a time to run. There is nothing more therapeutic than trail running. I usually run alone. With our great trail system, it’s a great way to commune with nature and find solitude from a busy daily life. I admire fit people running in their 70’s and 80’s. If I’m lucky, I hope to be one of those guys 30 years from now.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? As mentioned above, living on the West side of town is amazing. The Incline, Red Rocks Canyon Open Space, the Garden, Bear Creek, Section 16 and Cheyenne Canon are all within a few minutes of home. My favorite route is the Contemplative/Roundup trail in Red Rocks. Early morning during the work week, you can have this amazing park to yourself.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I like to mountain and road bike the same city trails and streets that are great for running. In the winter it’s fun to ski and summer in Colorado is great for camping, backpacking, fishing, etc. I love spending time with my wife Julie doing these activities. Our son Brendan is at CSU in Fort Collins. We’re proud to say he completed his first half-marathon this spring! He and I love to fly-fish together.

Update: Covid-19

RACE UPDATE: Because of rising Covid-19 infection rates in El Paso County, Cheyenne Mountain State Park is mandating a participation cap of 250 runners in the Oct. 24 Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race. Only a few spots remaining, so register soon!
Plans call for the creation of a virtual race with proceeds going to our nonprofit partner Achilles Pikes Peak.
*
Hello Cheyenne Mountain Trail Racers,
We have received permission from Cheyenne Mountain State Park to hold the 10th Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race on Saturday, Oct. 24.
When you run with us, you’re running to help others. This race supports Achilles Pikes Peak, the nonprofit that helps athletes with disabilities to live active lives.
As we all know, running events look a little different these days as we adapt to covid-19 protocols. We’re going to do our best to make our event stress free and easy to navigate. While we must remain somewhat fluid, our plans are coming together. Here is how we’re meeting our new challenges.
Course changes
The park ranger has requested that we eliminate as much head-to-head traffic on the course as possible. We’re close to nailing down new courses. The 50K and 25K courses will be similar to our traditional course. Our 10K will be entirely different.
Start times
To make this work, we’ll need to condense our start times. The best info we can provide one month out is for all racers to be parked and ready to run at 8 a.m. We’ll nail this down and update you well before race day.
Volunteers
We need them! If you know of anyone, please have them e-mail co-race director Tim Bergsten at tim.bergsten@gmail.com.
Packet pick-up
We’ll have early packet-pick-up from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Colorado Running Company, our longtime sponsor. Drive-up service, no need to get out of your car. We’ll provide a map in our pre-race e-mail.
Race-day packet pick-up begins at 7 a.m. in the parking lot at the Limekiln Trailhead at CMSP.
Race day
• The general theme here is to prevent gathering in large groups.
• Social distance at all times, including during the race (obviously not always possible, but you get the idea.)
• Masks are required at all times, but may be removed when the run begins
• Upon arrival, remain in the parking lot or disperse for a warm-up. Avoid the start area. We’ll have water/Gatorade available in the parking lot.
• Wave starts. We’ll need your help as runners will be asked to seed themselves. We’ll call you to the start line. Elites and fast, competitive runners will start first, then the next fastest etc. (More details to come.) Please social distance and wear your mask until the race starts.
• Upon arriving, please sign our covid waiver which essentially says you are not sick and to your knowledge have not been exposed to anyone with the virus. All runners and volunteers must do this. We’ll have tables set up for this near packet pick-up.
• Upon finishing the race, please exit the finish area. We’ll have food and drink in the parking lot.

Shopping at the Colorado Running Company: Just do it! But please make the necessary arrangements by visiting the CRC website, https://corunco.com/. Online shopping also available!
As mentioned, more details to come, but if we can stick to this plan we’ll ensure the success of this and future running races.
Thanks for your understanding and patience,

Pikes Peak Marathon: Alex Nichols for the win

Alex Nichols was running third, often unable to see the leaders, and starting to feel just a little desperate about his chance to win Sunday’s 60th running of the Pikes Peak Marathon. It’s a victory he’d dreamed about for at least three years – since finishing second in 2012 and again in ’13 – and it seemed to be slipping away.

“It’s obviously a long race, so no single mile will win or lose the race,” said Nichols, 30, who ran for Colorado College a decade ago and is now the long distance running coach for the CC women. “I could see the two guys ahead of me occasionally, but it’s still nerve-wracking to be two or three minutes behind in a race like this. “I had a big mental battle on the second half of the uphill. I didn’t feel great and just had to let them go ahead of me. I just had to have faith in my training.”

Nichols’ advantage – besides being the only one of the three leaders to regularly train at altitude – was his improved skill at running downhill. That made the difference. He caught the leaders just a few miles after making the turnaround at the summit of Pikes Peak. He passed Rickey Gates, who took third, at an aid station and swept past Abu Diriba at a narrow spot on the trail and scraped his leg on a rock.

At that point, though, nothing could stop Nichols from achieving his goal. He finished first in 3:46:40 – that was seven minutes, 24 seconds ahead of Diriba (3:54:04), a New York City resident of Ethiopian descent, and nearly nine minutes ahead of Gates (3:55:31), who is from Aspen but lives in Madison, Wis. – and crossed the finish line with a big smile after slapping high fives with race spectators over the final hundred yards. Read more ...

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I think I was born a runner and got into it formally in high school where I ran track and cross country. In PE class one day my coach asked me to pace the class in a 90 second 440. I had no idea how fast that was, so I just took off and ended running a 70 second or so lap. He walked over to me and said, “You just made the track team.” I started running again 9 years ago when I just couldn’t stand going to races with my daughter and not participating. I missed the camaraderie of runners. I started running after the Winter Series race in Fox Run Park in 2005 and haven’t stopped, except for those occasional injuries.

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience was doing the Dunkin Donut Cape Cod marathon with my daughter. We ran side by side for the entire race and helped each other get through it. Her goal was to beat Oprah’s time, and we did manage that. My race last week at the Big Sur Marathon was my best race. I ran it smart, met my goals, and finished without any strains, pulls, aches or injuries other than losing the toenail I always lose in a marathon.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The Triple Crown is a great series. It has it all; running in the Garden of the Gods has got to be the most beautiful 10-mile course anywhere and is a challenge in terms of maintaining a good even effort. The Summer Round Up is a fast trail race that has just enough hills to be tough but not so long as to be impossible. And the Ascent/Marathon What more could a trail runner want than to run up (and I use “run” euphemistically for survive) a 14,000 foot mountain having volunteers taking water and food up for you? Combined they provide a challenge that is hard to beat. I have placed a couple times in The Triple Crown in my age group, but that is mostly because not many people my age do all three. I figure if I finish I have a chance at placing.

Why do you run? Ever since reading the book, “Younger Next Year,” I have had that as my motto. Running is in my blood and when I was not running I was stressed, overweight, and out of shape. There is no question that running keeps me young and healthy. I could go into the endorphin highs, the excitement of doing well in a race, or the thrill of watching my peers do well, but those are all secondary to the fact that I love it. Winter runs in gently falling snow with the only sounds my breathing and feet touching down, or summer runs in a warm rain, nothing is like being out on the trail.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I have two favorite places I love to run. In the Garden of the Gods I can run on good trails with challenging hills and soft downhill. There are enough trails that I’ve done 20-mile runs there and not gone over much of the same course. The views of the rocks are spectacular and are a testament to the power of geologic forces. My other favorite place is on Pikes Peak along the Barr Trail above No Name up to Barr Camp. Not many people make it up there so most of the time I get to be by myself or with my fellow runners. The country up there is peaceful, except in the storms, and the trail is not so hard that my mind can’t wander to how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful spot.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I’m not sure how I was ever able to find time to work. My wife and I love to travel so we get in a couple good trips every year often visiting our daughters. I volunteer with several groups and have recently found joy in working with the Achilles International group here in the Pikes Peak area. I have a 5000 gallon koi pond in my back yard and I spend a lot of time just enjoying watching the fish and maintaining the pond and plants as well as helping others with their ponds, I’ve been an avid fly fisherman all my life and try and get in a trip to a stream or lake every week or two. The fall always finds me in the mountains hunting for elk and deer.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Every since I was little I always loved running, but it wasn’t until high school that I took it more seriously. I have been a competitive runner for 12 years. I competed on the cross-country team in high school, but it wasn’t until I tore my ACL and meniscus playing basketball during my senior year of high school that running became my sole focus. I grew up in New Jersey and running on the beach was one of my favorite things. Now that I moved out to Colorado Springs, I have traded my sandy running shoes in for muddy trail running sneakers. Right now, I enjoy exploring all the running trails in Colorado Springs and consider myself a trail runner in the making.

Tell us about your best running experience. My best running experience would be the Blue Cross Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. It is one of the biggest 10-miler road races in the country. It was right after the Boston bombing, they briefly thought about canceling the race, but instead they decided to show support for it by having it. It was such an incredible race, not only were there over 37,000 people running in the race but each mile was filled with hundreds of people cheering on all of the runners, showing their support. Strangers were high-fiving us as we went a long, motivating us to keep going. I have visited Philadelphia many times but had never seen such comradery and “brotherly love” as I did that day during the race. All the runners were wearing red to show their support for Boston.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown Running series? I moved to Colorado Springs last June and had only been living in the Springs for a few months when I started doing stories on the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon last year. It also happened to be the World Championships for Mountain Running as well. So after doing a few stories on the race, I decided to go watch it from the top of Pikes Peak. Seeing these “super athletes” run up Pikes Peak was incredible, I was in awe of them. I knew I wanted to run that race one day, maybe not at their super human pace, but I knew I wanted to run it at least one time. So in order to hold my self-accountable and actually run the race, I knew the best way to prepare and to commit to it, was signing up for the Triple Crown Race Series. Not only would the races help me prepare for the epic Pikes Peak Ascent, it would also hold me accountable for my training because I would be a part of team and blogging about my experience.

Why do you run? I run for a lot of reasons. I run to work on my fitness. I run to stay in shape and stay healthy. I run because I like being competitive and setting new goals and completing them. I run because it helps me clear my mind and helps me focus on myself while exploring Mother Nature. One of my biggest obstacles in Colorado is running non-stop because I normally always want to stop and take pictures of the beautiful scenery I am running by.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I have lived in Colorado Springs for almost a year now, and I try to explore as many trails as I can. Just when I think I find my favorite trail, I find a new one to explore. That’s something I love about Colorado. But If I had to choose as of now, I like running at Red Rock Canyon Open Space. It’s a new park I have been training at and I feel like I still haven’t explored all the trails it has to offer. However, this could change again in a month or so.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? If I am not running I am either out dancing with my friends, binge watching some of my some favorite TV shows like House of Cards or Game of Thrones, or trying to master cooking. Also, you might find me on the basketball court or the soccer field volunteer coaching for 5- and 6-year-olds at the YMCA downtown.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Wait!? I’m supposed to be a runner??! I’ve been a competitive cyclist (mountain and cyclocross) since 2006, running has been an intermittent part of that and then my dominant sport since the birth of our daughter in November 2013. Running was more bang for my buck after Wren was born. To call myself a “Runner” though, that’s a big step. *wink*

Tell us about your best running experience. I get euphoric on the incline EVERY time I do it. It’s that guaranteed running high for me, but maybe that’s because I’m redlined the entire time. That level of exertion is tough for me to achieve with speed alone and I savor that there’s no option but to go hard and hang on.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I’ve sumitted 30 Colorado 14ers and a handful of 13ers and on all of those mountains you think about the ones that folks race up. Evans (and now Pikes Peak) on bikes, Pikes Peak and Quandary on foot, a whole string of them stitched together for the Nolan’s 14 and so on. Living at the base of Pikes Peak makes it an ongoing need to experience. That mountain plays with endorphin junkies’ heads’ every damn day. I’ve hiked it, biked it, cogged it, even spent a couple summers as a bike guide before the road was open to cyclists. All of which leads to my need to toe the startline and run/race it. I love how hard it is to race at altitude, how it tamps down on your body in a way you can’t explain no matter how many times you experience it. Again, I’m a pain junky and The Ascent and her fellow races serve up a steep order. I’m stoked to embark on an experience pretty far out of my usual set of tricks, and yet still so closely aligned.

Why do you run? If we’re being honest, because I struggle with severe depression and running is a powerful drug. It’s been five years since I attempted suicide following a long dark depression and cycling and running have been fundamental to my recovery and mental health. That’s heavy stuff, but important to share because keeping silent perpetuates the problem. Not to mention it proves we run for a lot of different reasons, but in the end we all run to be well.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I love how hard this is to answer! As mentioned before I’m a cliche and love The Incline because it’s a guaranteed hard effort. I’ve also found some really good rhythm in Ute Valley Park and Palmer Park - the flow of the trails is primo.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? My wife and I have two kids, ages 11 and 1, so life is extra eventful with the family. We’re a family that believes in adventuring together. I play the guitar a little since my last name’s Musick. I LOVE climbing 14ers and have a goal of climbing them all. And have a few mean mountain bike skills.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? I didn't pick up running until later in life. I started consistently running in my late 20's by chance. My company had some people doing the Race For the Cure and I decided to jump in. I wasn't a runner but played racquetball siz days a week so figured I'd be fine for the 5K. It was brutally hard for me but I did it and felt good about myself. Another person from the office saw me finish after him and made a derogatory comment about my race that I was feeling so good about. For the next 12 months, I ran with the negative comments in my head as fuel to beat this guy at the same race the next year. The next year came, I placed fifth overall, and was on the massage table as he came through the finish. At the time, I had great satisfaction but now I just think it was silly. I got into the sport for the wrong reasons yet those negative words fueled the healthiest thing that could have ever happened to me...the love for running. I've tweaked it a bit with pursuing triathlon the past ten years but running has always been there for me.

Tell us about your best running experience. My favorite running experience was my first time up The Incline. I credit this single experience for connecting me to the trails that I still love so much today. I was still relatively new to running and very new to trail running. I showed up for an Incline Club run way back when they used The Incline as a weekday run. I had just met a guy named Rick Hessek (who is still a great friend today!) who invited me so I showed up not really knowing what it was all about. It was the hardest thing I'd ever encountered in my life and got me hooked on the trails.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? The main thing is that it's a test of fitness over an entire summer. With it being a series that counts total time, it becomes a bit of a chess match. Peaked in June for the Garden? That could cost me in August during The Ascent. I look forward to the challenge. Another reason is the depth of competition. I love knowing that if I do well, it was against a field that has top level runners. I know that if I walk away with any type of awards, I had to work my tail off to earn it.

Why do you run?I'm not going to give you a feel good story about why I run because I don't really have one. The bottom line is that I run because I like to compete. I've been able to work my way up to where I am competitive for awards in most races I enter and that motivates me. It's what makes running so much fun. As much as I love the trails and how I can get lost in the beauty while running them, I still get out because I know it's going to allow me to be more competitive when I race.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why?My favorite place to run in Colorado Springs is Ute Valley Park. It's beautiful, challenging and easy to get to. It's an absolute gem right in the middle of our fine city.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do?When I'm not running, I manage to keep busy. I have a wife, two daughters, 17 and 10, and a 5-year-old son. They are my joys in life and I have a job that allows me to spend a lot of time with them. We build things, hike, go fishing lots of the other stuff that our beautiful area provides. Although I have moved away from triathlon, I still bike and run just because I like it and the people associated with it. I am a HUGE baseball fan. Yep, I'm one of the few but I love my baseball, specifically the Angels. They are my team and I have never wavered and never will! Finally, the last thing I like to do when not running is eat bacon. Lots and lots of bacon.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? Basically, the Army made me start running in 1989 if I wanted to keep my college scholarship and not have to go back home and live with my parents.
Tell us about your best running experience. My favorite running experiences are the races that I've run with my kids. I figure if I can push myself to tackle challenges like the Triple Crown, while also managing all the other tasks life throws my way, I may have a fighting chance of survival. The Triple Crown is really a benchmark for me and I'm looking forward to improving my times from 2013!

Why do you run? Because punching people is frowned upon. (I REALLY need someone to buy me that T-shirt). Plus, there tends to be beer at many finish lines.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I really love running in the Garden, but I think my favorite place has to be just up and down the Santa Fe trail with my friends. The pure therapy of those runs have gotten me through many tough days. My friends are definitely awesome and the local running community as a whole is phenomenal!

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I'm a huge craft beer enthusiast, so I like to make the rounds of all the good local breweries and am still trying to find the perfect chocolate pale ale. I also love camping (but only in my RV) and am trying to keep up with my husband's goal to visit every museum in America.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started?I still find myself sometimes wishing I was a "real runner," whatever that means. I ran track in high school (2000-04) and was actually pretty descent at the 400 and 800. But then I went of to CU Boulder for an education, hips and the unwelcome Freshman 15. I ran periodically on the dreadmill to try to get rid of my 'chub,' and then slowly decided running was hard and quit. I decided the best time to start racing was in 2009 (while recovering from my second ACL surgery) when a friend invited me to the Summer Roundup. After I didn't die, I thought maybe I would give running another shot, and have been going ever since.

Tell us about your best running experience. I am torn between so many! The first time I did the Ascent was definitely a good one simply because I couldn't believe I had really done it. It was only a few years prior I remember being in Manitou on race day thinking to myself, "Those people are nuts! How can they get to the top of Pikes Peak in one day! I could NEVER do that." And then I did!

Another experience that sticks out in my mind is the Ragnar Trail Relay in Snowmass last year. It was literally a few days after my mom unexpectedly passed away. I decided to go anyway, despite the my life had been turned upside down. I didnt know any of my teammates all that well, but when I met up with them in Snowmass they surprised me with Batgirl costumes for us all to run in (because mom's are like superheros, and my mom was MY superhero). Besides the epic scenery on the trials and amazing night sky, the comradery and craziness that is Ragner was just what I needed.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? What attracted me I guess was that it is tough. It was a challenge, something that scared me and I wanted to see if I was tough enough to survive them all. I have run the Summer Roundup a handful of times, and the Ascent twice, but never the Garden of the Gods 10. This year I lost my mind signed up to Double on Pikes Peak. Talk about something that scares me!

Why do you run? Its funny you should ask, because I ask myself that all the time! There are so many moments I can recall where I have been struggling and wondered "why am I doing this?!" BUT, it all comes rushing back to me when I am out on a trail with a a breeze blowing in my face, the sun setting in the distance and the smell of rain in the air. It makes me feel alive. I guess that's it, that's why I run, because it makes me feel alive! I think another reason I keep running is because it becomes addicting after you start seeing results and improvement. Oh, and because I am always discovering new trails to explore.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area, and why? I am pretty embarrassed to admit that there are a ton of trails in the area that I have yet to set foot on. I don't even want to name them off because then no one will take me seriously from here on out! Rest assured I am aiming to change that this summer. I want to explore all the trails! I love Waldo Canyon and I love the Incline at odd hours (not so much when it's busy) and Palmer Park is definitely up there. Palmer Park is one of my favorites because it has some challenging terrain, but nothing too crazy. It also has some amazing views of Pikes Peak and the city AND I am usually running there with some of my favorite people from Boulder Running Company's Run Group.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? I have been told I like to eat ... i.e. "You're eating again?!", "You're still eating?!", "Did you really eat all of that?!" and so on. I also very much enjoy napping, Crossfitting (yes, I am one of "those people" bro), graphic designing and consuming tasty beverages such as a Bloody Mary (WITH bacon) or a Left Hand Milk Stout.

How long have you been a runner and how did you get started? The latest edition of my running life started about 5 years ago. I proposed to my wife and as a sucker she said yes. In order to lose weight and quit smoking she started running. A very good friend of mine was running regularly at Jack Quinn's Running Club and goaded me into joining him. He then signed me up for the Helacious Trail race and I was hooked.

Tell us about your best running experience. Topping out on Pikes Peak in 2012. It was my first time doing the Ascent and I was almost overcome with emotion. I walked away from the finish and the crowd and sat on a rock alone to reflect upon what I had just done. We had trained for over a year to get to that point. I needed to run my first half marathon to obtain a qualifying time. Then we had to train for the race itself. While I still have not had a perfect race on the peak that one sticks out as an incredible experience.

What attracted you to the Triple Crown of Running series? I have raced on the peak for the last three years and the Garden 10 mile is one of my favorite races. I have yet to complete The Summer Roundup so I am really looking forward to that race. I think that the races are so well ran and such great events that this year I decided to complete all three.

Why do you run? I run for a few reasons. Health and weight being obvious choices. My fondness for beer makes regular exercise necessary! I also love the sense of community within Colorado Springs runners. I have participated in quite a few other sports and the community and camaraderie was nothing like our local running scene. I have met and become friends with such a varied level of people having different interests and abilities. Unlike other sports there does not seem to be a ton of ego or attitude as a rule. It is refreshing to participate at a race and everyone is so positive and encouraging.

Where is your favorite place to run in the Colorado Springs area and why? This is really tough to answer. I love running alone on weeknights in the Bear Creek area. Saturday laps around Rampart Reservoir. Getting completely humbled on The Ute Pass Trail up to Longs Ranch Road. Lately I have also been loving Rampart Range Road and the Garden of the Gods. The amount of places to run in the region is incredible.

When you aren't running or working, what do you like to do? Outside of running I enjoy sampling the local breweries with my wife, wrenching on cars, and occasionally strumming my guitar.

MANITOU SPRINGS – When Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton looked around early in Sunday’s 38th annual Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run and saw no one challenging her, she decided to do a little sight-seeing.

“I looked back, and I didn’t see anyone, so I had time to look around at the scenery and it was beautiful,” said the 25-year-old Kenya native, who now lives and trains in Santa Fe, N.M. “When you’re running with a deep field, you don’t have that opportunity, but today I wasn’t really worried.” Read the whole story ...

When Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton looked around early in Sunday’s 38th annual Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run and saw no one challenging her, she decided to do a little sight-seeing.

“I looked back, and I didn’t see anyone, so I had time to look around at the scenery and it was beautiful,” said the 25-year-old Kenya native, who now lives and trains in Santa Fe, N.M. “When you’re running with a deep field, you don’t have that opportunity, but today I wasn’t really worried.”

Tuliamuk-Bolton’s effort was no stroll in the park, however. She got down to business too, shattering the women’s course record in a winning time of 55 minutes, 55 seconds, placing her eighth overall in a field of nearly 1,600 on a cool, overcast day that was perfect for fast times. Her time was nearly three minutes faster than the 58:44 put up by last year’s winner, Belainesh Gebre of Ethiopia. It was also more than three minutes ahead of her training partner, Simegn Yeshanbel of Ethiopia and Albuquerque, New Mexico, who was second Sunday in 58:59.

Tuliamuk-Bolton, a fourteen-time NCAA Division I All-American in track and cross country, bolted from the starting line and never looked back.

“It was a really good day for me,” said the 2013 Wichita Sate grad. “It was probably the hardest (10-mile) course I have ever run. Knowing that my PR is 52:16, this was an awesome result. I feel like I am in great shape.” Get the whole story ...
