The 34-year-old Kenyan attained her dual goals of winning and breaking the course record and did it largely by running alone. She tried to shadow some of the faster male runners but settled into her own pace shortly into the race.

“We took off and it wasn’t long before I was mostly by myself,” Rotich said. “I could see some of the men ahead of me and wanted to catch them. I tried on the uphill portions but mostly ran by myself.”

Rotich, an internationally acclaimed runner who won the 2015 Boston Marathon, added the Garden of the Gods championship to a resume that includes victories in the Las Vegas Marathon and New York City Half Marathon.

She finished 11th overall, as Jerrell Mock, who recently concluded his outdoor track season at Colorado State University, won the men’s division in 51:17, 11 seconds ahead of Patrick Smyth of Santa Fe, N.M.

Rotich’s time of 57:36 eclipsed the women’s 10-mile course record by 67 seconds, which was set just a year ago by Elvin Kibert of Colorado Springs. Kibert was second behind Rotich, finishing in 1:01:14.

“I really wanted the course record, so I didn’t want to go out too fast because this course is so up and down,” Rotich said. “I like this type of course but it’s really hard on the legs going downhill. Where I lived in Kenya, there weren’t too many hills like this. It’s a really hard course, up and down throughout.

“I thought about trying to run with the lead (men) when we started out, but I knew I couldn’t or I would’ve died quickly. I wanted the course record, so I ran my own race.”

Rotich, who lives in Santa Fe, visited friends in Colorado Springs last winter. She expects to return to defend her title, and said her ultimate goal remains qualifying for the Olympic Marathon.

“I loved running here, and I want to come back (to the Springs),” she said. “This was a fun day.”

Mock echoed that sentiment, especially since it helped to quell his disappointment at not qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships that concluded Saturday in Eugene, Ore. He qualified for the NCAA Outdoor 10,000 meters as a junior, but battled injuries his senior season.

“This was my first road race,” said the CSU grad. “I wanted to get one in while I was feeling fit, and since this is the peak of road racing season, I might keep going and do some more before I take a break. I want to get into (half marathons), eventually.”

Mock attended high school in Logan, Utah, before relocating to Fort Collins for college. He didn’t know what to expect in Sunday’s race, and simply jumped out front with the leaders at the outset.

“I wasn’t sure who would be here, but I knew we’d have to average about a 5:05 pace to be up front,” he said.

Mock and Smyth, a seven-time All-American distance runner at Notre Dame, battled throughout the race. Smyth, 31, who is eight years older than Mock, was pushing the pace on the downhill portions of the course.

“We were 1-2 for a long time,” Mock said. “I started trying to squeeze the uphills to get away.”

Smyth said he “lost contact” with Mock at about the 6.5-mile mark “on one of the uphills.”

“On each downhill, I’d try to cinch it up,” he said. “(Mock) really hung tough.”

Mock said he “hit a bit of a wall” in miles 8 and 9 but regrouped for the final mile to finish fast. He needed every bit of that late speed to hold off Smyth, who said he runs for the Nike Trail Team and will compete in three weeks in the Marathon de Mont Blanc in France.

“I heard this was a great race and wanted to try it out, especially since it’s not far from Santa Fe,” Smyth said. “It’s more of a road race than trail but nothing is flat and it’s a good test.”
Smyth said he’ll return to the Springs in August to race in the Pikes Peak Marathon.

Finishing third overall was Tesfaalem Mehari, 21, of Colorado Springs in 52:19. He was followed by Alanya Weldemariam, 39, of the Springs in 52:34 and Gebrekidan Abadi, 33, of Aurora in 52:47.

Ben Payne, 36, of Colorado Springs, was sixth in 53:50. After finishing, he was greeted by his wife and 11-month-old son, Palmer.

“This is a fun race, and it’s just two miles from my house,” said Payne, who also ran the Pikes Peak Ascent last August. “I’ve been running more for fun than competition lately, so I had to let the leaders go pretty early. Pacing yourself is important in this race because you can get in trouble early if you go too hard. This is one of the hardest courses with the altitude and the constant up and downs.”
Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., testing for PEDs in 2018 racestag:pikespeaksports.us,2018-06-09:5021591:Topic:8023222018-06-09T15:33:49.099ZTim Bergstenhttp://pikespeaksports.us/profile/TimBergsten

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. – In the interest of fair play and clean sport, Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., has announced that it will conduct independent drug testing at its 2018 running races. Testing will begin on Sunday, June 10, at the 42nd running of the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile & 10K Run.

“We want to ensure the integrity of our races, as well as our iconic course records,” says Ron Ilgen, President of Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc. “With the rapid growth of mountain running, along with providing substantial prize money awards, it is important to provide drug-free competition.”

Runners may also be tested at the Summer Roundup Half Marathon, the Barr Trail Mountain Race and the Pikes Peak Ascent. As part of the new Golden Trail Series, drug testing at the Pikes Peak Marathon will be provided by Salomon, race sponsor and Golden Trail Series organizer.

Racing clean has been a priority for Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., which in 2013 contracted with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to become one of the first mountain races to test for performance-enhancing drugs.

Costs for drug testing can be prohibitive, especially for mid-sized and smaller race organizations. Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc. is fortunate to have forged a partnership with Any Lab Test Now, a Colorado Springs company, making it possible to host cleaner competitions.

“Ensuring that local events maintain the highest standards of fair play and healthy competition is of utmost importance to us,” says Amy Neary, owner of Any Lab Test Now. “We are thrilled to be able to partner with Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., an organization with goals and a vision that match ours.”

Any Lab Test Now makes it easy for consumers and businesses alike to manage their health by providing direct access to clinical lab tests, paternity and other DNA family relationship tests, drug and alcohol and other toxicology testing services. The company provides the doctor's order free of charge, which saves time and money, and gives consumers a unique and previously unavailable experience.

The tests will look only for performance-enhancing drugs as outlined by USADA, and the results will be reported only to Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., and tested competitors. A positive test will result in race disqualification and a lifetime ban from all Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., events. The decision to test has received positive feedback from the running community.

Elite runner and Barr Trail Mountain Race committee member Peter Maksimow said it’s important to take a stand in the name of clean competition, and to protect the integrity of mountain running.

“As an athlete, this gives me peace of mind that my performance and the performance of other competitors is honest,” he says. “As a race committee member, this protects the integrity and financial assets of our race. This should send a strong message to those that do not play by the rules.”
Garden of the Gods bear becomes international media darlingtag:pikespeaksports.us,2017-06-19:5021591:Topic:7671462017-06-19T12:51:06.494ZTim Bergstenhttp://pikespeaksports.us/profile/TimBergsten

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. – A favorite local running race that meanders through one of the country’s most iconic landmarks will feature a new course and a new post-race celebration in 2017.

The Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run and 10K, set for 7 a.m. June 11, will now begin on Gateway Rd. near the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center. The race courses circle through the towering red pinnacles and finish on the beautiful grounds of Rock Ledge Ranch, just in time for the start of the new Garden of the Gods Run Fest, featuring live music, food, beer and activities for adults and kids.

For online race registration and more information visit http://gardentenmile.com/. The Run Fest will begin at 8 a.m. and is free to all.

Race organizers created the new course layout and after party as a way to showcase the best of the Garden of the Gods, including historic Rock Ledge Ranch. The Run Fest will bring running organizations and the outdoor community together in an effort to increase recognition and support for the Garden of the Gods Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing and protecting the park. The Garden of the Gods was donated to the city in 1909.

“We want to create a way for the race organization and our runners to provide financial assistance to the Garden of the Gods park and also show our appreciation for such a beautiful race venue,” says Ron Ilgen, President of Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc.

This year will mark the 41st running of the event, one of the most challenging road races in the country. Runners jokingly refer to the 10-miler as the “toughest half marathon they’ve ever run.” And the scenery is impossible to ignore. In fact, the Garden of the Gods has been recognized by travel website TripAdvisor as the No. 1 Park in the Country, and it recently was mentioned among such attractions as the Grand Canyon and Havasu Falls in Arizona.

It makes sense for the historic running race and the Garden of the Gods Foundation to form a partnership.

“We're very excited that this longtime event is stepping in to give something back to the park we love,” says Jan Martin, Garden of the Gods Foundation trustee. “It’ll help bring awareness to the years of service devoted to the park by the Garden of the Gods Foundation.”

Runners in the 10-mile and 10K races will experience the best of the Garden of the Gods. The courses are contained within park boundaries, and the finish in Rock Ledge Ranch will provide the perfect ending as participants pass farm animals and barns before landing at the Run Fest. The final half mile of the races will be run on gravel roads and a short trail section.

The Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run is the first leg in the Triple Crown of Running series, which continues on July 9 with the Summer Roundup Trail Run (http://summerroundup.com/) and culminates with the 62nd Running of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon on Aug. 19-20 (http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/.)
Warm up your keyboards, Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent registration opens Saturdaytag:pikespeaksports.us,2017-03-07:5021591:Topic:7544582017-03-07T22:18:07.290ZTim Bergstenhttp://pikespeaksports.us/profile/TimBergsten

Sure, it’s beautiful. That's apparent - if you manage to shift your focus from the road in front of you to the sandstone spires in Garden of the Gods Park and the snow-capped backdrop of Pikes Peak.
But every runner in the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run notices the hills. You don’t have to look for them. You feel them.
“So many hills,” said Valentine Kibet, the women’s 10-Mile winner, smiling at the painful memory. With the finish line more than an hour in her past, Kibet even managed a laugh. “It was a tough race, but good,” she said.
Kibet finished the 40th annual race in 1 hour, 1 minute and 36 seconds, on par with her recent race times. The 26-year-old Kenyan, who comes from a family of accomplished runners, is living and training in Colorado Springs in hopes of topping the international women's half-marathon field.
Overall winner Daniel Girmay, who finished in 52:21, also is living and training in Colorado Springs. He was drawn to the benefits of training at altitude, but appreciates the scenery. The 19-year-old Ethiopian said the city park, often referred to as the most scenic in the nation, is a “good place to run.”
Saturday morning’s clouds did little to mask the heat of recent days for the runners.
“Oh my goodness, it was a tough one - hilly and hot,” said top women’s 10K finisher Alexis Wilbert, 31, of Colorado Springs, who finished in 38:57.
Wilbert regularly runs through the park - but from the northern edge. "From up on 30th Street, I know the hills, I know when to push. But there were some surprises today, coming from this side." Still, Wilbert finished second overall in the inaugural 10K event to winner Jake Dialesandro, 27, of Las Cruces, N.M., who crossed the finish line in 36:19.
Knowing the course is a key to finishing strong, said a foursome of local runners who have trained together for months, two for the 10 Mile race and two for the 10K. Finding a training partner might be key to finishing the race at all, they said.
Training partners get you out the door in the morning, said 10-miler Gloria Arodak, 25, of
Colorado Springs. You can't slack off because you're accountable to someone, added Riannon
McCord, 35, of Colorado Springs, who finished the 10K after training with Emily Palmer, 25. Arodak trained with Jessica Parton, 30. "We push each other," she said of Parton. "When she slows down, I push harder. If I slow, she picks up the pace. I know she won't give up and because of that, I won't either."
The 10-mile race was a step along the comeback trail for Gerald Romero, 44, of Colorado Springs, who finished in 1:06:45. The veteran local racer took a few months off during winter to heal from injury, followed by about six weeks of light running.
While he is familiar with the course, he didn't know what to expect from his body.
"It was awesome - a great race as always," said a smiling Romero, whose enthusiasm might be as familiar to spectators and other runners as his tattooed arms. "I'm real happy with that race. Now I just need to stay healthy."
Keeping his good health motivates Jay Survil, 57, to keep hitting the pavement. The Aurora runner, who topped his age group in last year's Triple Crown races, finished the 10 Mile race Sunday in 1:07:33. He was first in his age group - and set a personal reacord - at the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon on May 15 and also won his age group at the Colorado Marathon on May 1.
"You'll see me out here as long as I'm healthy," he said. "I'm driven. It's my thing."
Leading up to Sunday's race, Ian Guiterrez, 49, focused on training his 14-year-old daughter, Dana. They finished the race together in just over 51 minutes, and hardly looked winded. Now, he said, Dana will lead the training and he'll try to keep up.
"You need to find someone to run with you who'll keep it fun," Dana said.
The Garden of the Gods 10 Mile is the first leg of the Triple Crown of Running. Next up is the Summer Roundup Trail Run 12K on July 10, followed by the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon on Aug. 20 and 21.
Although the Ascent is effectively a half marathon and that distance is Kibet's focus, don't expect to see her at the start line in August. Asked if she would consider running up Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak, Kibet laughed and gently shook her head.
“No, no, no,” Kibet said. “No running up the mountain.”
But more than anything, she was feeling a little lonesome.

She had battled at the front of the pack with the men in the 5K race, but when they turned for the finish line she was left to run the longer distance with no company.

“It was lonely, to be honest,” she said. “I like running with people. It helps push me a little bit more. But I had the police officer (motorcycle escort) leading me, so I was trying to keep up with him.”

With the entire five-mile field behind her, Wilbert powered up the last hill then opened up her stride on the descending finish to win in 30 minutes, 34 seconds, a new course record for women. The former record was held by Stephanie Jones who ran 30:49 in 2007.

The win marked her second record-setting performance in a Grand Prix of Running Series race in as many starts. She set the women's record (17:07.81) at the 5K on St. Patrick's Day in March.

Wilbert didn’t specifically train for the rugged Garden course, but as a resident of Colorado Springs’ west side she gets all the hill work she wants on her regular training runs.

“You really can’t avoid the hills when you live over here,” she said.

Amy Coziana finished second in 34:05. Christi-Mari Butler was third in 34:05.

Bryan Beiner of Colorado Springs won the men’s five miler in 31:27. Steve Archibald placed second in 32:05, with Zachary Russell following in 33:10.

In the 5K, Amanda Occhi’s win among the women was the perfect start to Mother’s Day weekend.

“This is part of my Mother’s Day treat,” she said. “It’s this and I have a SunWater Spa thing tonight, so yeah, I’m excited about all of that."

The spa’s healing waters should help soothe the damage dished out in the race. Occhi, 38, said she had to work hard for the win.

“It was tough,” she said. “There were about four girls who were really close together, so I had to work pretty hard for that one,” she said. “I was in second place coming down the big (last) hill. I tried to kick it in that last mile.”

Only 28 seconds separated the top three women. Occhi finished in 20:51, with Amy Shertzer a few strides behind in 20:58. Heather Bates was third in 21:19.

Carl Arnold (right), 27, captured the men’s 5K with a time of 17:41. He was happy with the time, considering he’s not training for the 5K distance. A former Colorado high school state champion in the 800-meter run, Arnold is focused on the shorter distance. He has a personal best of 1:51 in the 800.

“I just want to break 1:50,” he said.

He'll aim for that goal at two track meets this summer, including the Rocky Mountain State Games in July.
The Master Gardener: Peter Fleming shares Garden of the Gods 10-mile advicetag:pikespeaksports.us,2016-04-17:5021591:Topic:7091842016-04-17T20:21:50.818ZTim Bergstenhttp://pikespeaksports.us/profile/TimBergsten

Peter Fleming has a love-hate relationship with the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run. He never really wanted to compete in the tough - but beautiful – race with its battery of hills and famous scenery. Then he tried it, and he suffered, but he came back for more. And in 2014, at age 53, he became the first masters runner to cover those iconic 10 miles (on the current course) in less than an hour, clocking 59 minutes, 32 seconds. Craig Young, 41 clocked a blazing 54:28 in 1998 on a different course layout.

A Scottish-born runner with a thick accent and sense of humor, Fleming lives in Colorado Springs and works at the Colorado Running Company. After two trips in the Garden 10, the masters’ record caught his attention.

“It kind of put the carrot in front of me,” Fleming said. “Or, in Scotland, the pint of beer in front of me. It was all downhill from there, really.”

He earned his spurs as a marathon runner, posting a personal best of 2:13:32. With the 40th running of the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile run and 10K set for June 12, Fleming talked about his training routine leading up to his record run.

It all started in February: I built up a lot of strength in my legs over the winter. This was a one-time goal for me. It wasn’t like I started training a month before. So I did a lot of lunges and squats to build up the quadriceps, build up my glutes for the hills and pavement. Basically just very light reps in the gym. No heavy weights. Things like single-leg squats, clam shells. All of these things helped. I wasn’t doing it every day, but maybe once or twice a week for eight weeks.

Video interview following his record run in 2014

Early season running: And then I was running a lot of trails at the time. I was running in the Garden, Ute Valley Park, Palmer Park. Then I slowly converted that trail running over to road running and more, kind of, speed workouts.

You have to (move from trails to pavement) really gradually, but you have to do it. There is no getting around it. I did a lot of my basework on trails to keep my legs from getting sore. The last six to eight weeks I did more running on asphalt. Mostly downhill running, just to get eccentric contraction muscle breakdown. I did a couple of good hard races. I did the Bolder Boulder, which is not an easy course, and I did the Take 5in the Garden, which is a good warmpup. It's only five miles, but it gets your legs ready.

And the head, you have to be thinking right because the Garden is one of these places where it plays with your head a little bit. All of these things contributed.

The hills: For me the worst hill is the big one (beginning at about Mile 4 near the intersection of Gateway Rd. and Juniper Way Loop.) I don’t care who you are, whether you’re the best in the world, or you’re on performance enhancing drugs, it’s still really tough. I kind of focus on that one mainly … to get up that one as best I can. If you can get up that one and feel fairly recovered and fairly fresh, the second half of the Garden is actually easier than the first half.

Hill training: Mostly, I did reps up the big hill (at Mile 4.) I would maybe do four of them with a three-mile warmup and three warmdown. I did that about four times and it seemed to help. I didn’t really focus on any of the other hills, the one up to Balanced Rock, or anything like that. I just worked on the main one because it comes at a difficult point in the race. That first five miles is pretty taxing.

Racing on hills: A lot of races I ran (while building up to the Garden,) I focused on climbing the hills really strong, and then floating, I call it floating. There is really not a lot you can do running downhill. You can’t really increase your cadence. You can try, but you’re over-striding, you’re going to do some damage, so for me it was all about working the uphills as hard as I could and then cruising the downhills. I mean you’re breaking on the downhills, so you have to be consistent with what you’re doing.

Mileage: I was running 30 miles a week. Two pretty hard 10-mile runs, and then two fives and the rest was on the elliptical because my legs can’t take 50-60 miles a week anymore. Believe it or not, you can do the Garden on 30 miles a week. It just needs to be high-quality stuff. It’s a good idea to run the course, but don’t run it at race pace. If you are going to run (the whole course as a tempo run), run it four weeks out, then don’t run it again. You don’t want to risk injury. I would do a max of 30 miles a week. The key thing is consistency, running at least four times a week, at least one long run. It doesn’t have to be in the Garden. The key is just getting time on your feet.

Peaking: One of the things that is hardest to learn as an athlete is to peak. That’s something I learned through my running career, is how to get ready on the day. You have to do cycles of training so, eventually, you are ready to click on the day. Even then you can never be guaranteed that everything will work out. But fortunately everything clicked that day. If your legs are fresh for the race, you are probably going to be OK. If you are already beaten up, by seven miles you’re going to be pretty much shot.

Tapering: Sunday (a week before the race) do six or seven miles, then take a day or two. You don’t need to run, you can do elliptical or cycling. On Tuesday, maybe five miles, Wednesday five miles. All the running during the week is easy jogging. Friday, three miles, then call it good. There isn’t anything you can add that is going to make you any better on the day except for rest and recovery. And a little bit of focus on the race. You don’t want to go to the start line like ... whistling. You want to be a little nervous about it. If you’re not, then I don’t think you’re going to run a great race.
PikesPeakSports.us to become voice of the Pikes Peak Marathontag:pikespeaksports.us,2016-03-10:5021591:Topic:7049372016-03-10T18:06:42.320ZTim Bergstenhttp://pikespeaksports.us/profile/TimBergsten

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - Hanging out beneath a shade tree at the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon Expo in 2012, Killian Jornet, arguably the world’s most famous mountain runner, signed autographs and visited with fellow runners and race fans.

They wanted to know what the tough Spaniard from the Salomon Trail Running Team thought about Pikes Peak. How did it stack up against the big European races? Jornet happily explained his fascination with America’s Mountain.

“When I started mountain running seven years ago, the races that everybody talked about were Sierre-Zinal (Switzerland), Zegama in Spain, and Pikes Peak in America,” Jornet said. “These are the three most important races in the world.”

It is for this reason, and many more, that Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., the umbrella organization for the Triple Crown of Running, and PikesPeakSports.us, a web-based outdoor publication in Colorado Springs, have teamed up to relaunch PikesPeakSports.us as the voice of the Pikes Peak Marathon. The content plan for the new version of the online magazine and social network will include stories, video, photos and blogs centric to the Pikes Peak events, as well as regional and national running coverage.

“We’re going to cover the events, the people and trends that are interesting to Pikes Peak runners,” said Tim Bergsten, founder and manager of PikesPeakSports.us. “We’ll explore how running shapes the unique culture of our mountain, and we’ll follow our runners to big stages such as the Mt. Washington Road Race and the U.S. Mountain Running Championships in New Hampshire, the Rut Mountain Runs in Montana, and other big mountain-ultra-trail races throughout the West.”

“There are many people and organizations that support the Pikes Peak races,” said Karole Campbell, Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., marketing manager. “With the magazine we’ll be able to offer our partners a year-round presence on a website that is actively pursuing readers and engaging in the larger running community.”

PikesPeakSports.us launched in 2010 as a community website and social network dedicated to active and healthful living in the Pikes Peak region. Marketing itself as “A Digital Stomping Ground for the Outdoor Community,” and a social network “Like Facebook for People with Rocks in their Shoes,” PikesPeakSports.us gained traction among the active niche of runners and cyclists in the Colorado Springs area. PikesPeakSports.us will remain a partner of the Pikes Peak region’s outdoor community.

“We have no intentions of forgetting our roots,” Bergsten said. “And I know the team at the Pikes Peak Marathon is very dedicated to supporting local races and events.”

The new magazine will, however, aim for larger audiences, sharing news of the Pikes Peak races and the trail-running life enjoyed by area athletes, elite-level runners and mid-packers alike.

This year marks the 61st running of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon, a race that began as a challenge between smokers and non-smokers. Since then it has become one of the premier mountain races in the world and a bucket-list event for runners of various abilities. Pikes Peak is also hallowed ground, of sorts, for women runners. In 1959 Arlene Pieper became the first woman to run a marathon in the United States when she completed the Pikes Peak Marathon in 9 hours, 16 minutes.

“The Pikes Peak Marathon started the tradition of Colorado Springs-area running,” said Ron Ilgen, Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc. president. “Since then it has become a leader in the mountain running world and in local running. PikesPeakSports.us will allow the organization to continue in this role by providing news and information about our historic events, and content of interest to our runners and sponsorship partners.”
