Start of Winter Series II long-course race

Alex Nichols sailed across the snow and ice to set a new course record in the Winter Series II 8-mile race on Saturday at Bear Creek Park. Nichols, 29, of Colorado Springs, clocked 44 minutes, 31 seconds, beating Jared Hazen's old mark by about 50 seconds.
Seth Kolosso (20, Pueblo West) was second with an age-group record of 45:17, while Alistair Eeckman (20, Colorado Springs) finished third in 48:09.
In the women's race, Kelly McRae, 33, of Colorado Springs, took the win in 56:21. Crystal Goecker (36, Colorado Springs) dashed to second place in 57:27. Wendy Stalnaker (36, Colorado Springs) was third in 58:29.
