JFK 50 miler review, nearly a year too late!

November 2019 already? Here is my JFK 50 race report from November 2018. It is a rosy race report because it is helped by the kind filter of time.

The last time I talked about this race, in October 2018, I was debating which shoes to use. I continued debating which shoe to use until the days before the race, but the snowy conditions on the hilly Appalachian trail section forced me to pick the…

Salida "Run Through Time" Race Report

I loved this race.

Yesterday I completed the Salida "Run Through Time" half marathon with several members of the Attack Pack running group. A trail race in March in Salida has the ingredients for a potential disaster, but this year it was a blast.  Due to my recent injuries that caused me to drop out of the LA Marathon, I was hesitant to sign up for a race. ESPECIALLY since I had been training for flat and fast, not rolling…

Pikes Peak Ascent Race Strategy 101

As the Pikes Peak Ascent race is just over 6 weeks away, I decided to spend some time on my race strategy this week.

I first looked at the course on the Pikes Peak Marathon website.

This map shows the mileage, elevation, and aid stations along the race…

When Racing, Should You Run By Pace or Effort?

Someone asked me this week at the BRC Wednesday night group run if I wanted to run the Garden of the Gods 10 miler for a certain time. Since I have been running the course, I do have a general time in mind that I will aim for during the race.

However, it got me to thinking about this question:

When racing, should you run by pace or effort?

For me, it all depends. Previous to this past year, I ran mostly road 5k's. During…

3 Tips to Prepare for a NEW Race

As part of the PPS Triple Crown team, I will be running three tough races this summer...

  1. The Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run
  2. Summer Roundup 12k
  3. And the infamous Pikes Peak…

Oh What a Feeling

Wow! There’s a word that’s almost as overused as awesome. However it succinctly sums up all of my feelings in one, tidy, three-letter word. The Ascent was the exclamation point on one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, i.e. participating in all three Triple Crown runs. I can heartily recommend these three runs to anyone who is seeking a…

I will write about this in more detail soon enough, but for now ... HOLY CRAP I DID IT!

Here Goes Nothing

The Attack Pack and friends ready to take on the Falcon Trail in the dark.

Whenever I sign up for new race distances or athletic endeavors, I always envision feeling far more "ready" when race day/week/month actually arrives. The time between signing up and executing stretches on forever, week upon week of mythical training runs cascading into the future,…

Trying to Find the Words

This is where I was when the Waldo Canyon fire started. Eight miles of hiking and a four-hour drive away from home. Miles and miles away from cell phone signal. Utterly alone except for the one person I hiked in with. LB and I both had hectic weeks, so it was nice to get out in the woods and breathe.

When we turned on our phones on Monday after reluctantly driving the…

A Gem of a Day for the Crown

One jewel of the Triple Crown in hand (Garden of the Gods 10-mile Run) I pursue the next, the Summer Round-Up.

Since every successful running team needs someone to run the anchor leg, I am officially declaring myself the…

GOG Race Report

This is the only shot any of the photographers (in this case, Tim) managed to catch of me during the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Race, as far as I can tell. As you can see, I appear to be having a one-woman party about half a mile into the race while everyone else is focusing on the task at hand.…

20 before 20

The CC class of 2014 (my class) adopted the class motto "Damn, those fourteeners are high!" this year, and though the intended implication doesn't really resonate with me, it did help to inspire a new goal of mine for this summer. I turn 20 in just under a month, and have decided that I want to have climbed 20 of the Colorado fourteeners before then. I'm a little ashamed to say that, in all my years living here, I've only done 10 of them. This summer is fast becoming the most ambitious of my…

Am I Forgetting Something?

Oh yeah. Cross training. I feel like I used to be better at it. But when I was training for my last "regular" marathon (the Tobacco Road Marathon in Raleigh, NC, on March 18), I settled into a groove: four runs a week, three yoga classes a week, rest day (or maybe two). I used to lift weights or swim laps or go to…

Red Rock Relay Recap

It's 2011 and that means Relay #4 with the "not professional" relay team Girls Heart Rockets. This year I joined the rocket loving girls for the Red Rock Relay in Utah and as usual had a blast! Here's a recap (as best I can remember with the lack of sleep) of my adventure.…

THE COLORADO RELAY: 9 runners. 200 miles. 32 hours. 0 sleep.

This adventure started with a conversation with a coworker. She had found this event, the Colorado Relay, and was putting a team together. I volunteered, mostly because I wanted to skip a year of the Pikes Peak Ascent but still spend…

A Beautiful Pursuit

Losing weight is easy.  Keeping it off is the hard part.

I’m a compulsive overeater and food addict.  And a stress eater … and a boredom eater … and hey, while we’re at it, let’s throw emotional eater and “just-because-it’s-there” eater in there, too.  I tipped the scales at 237 in 2001, and at only 5’1”, that’s fat!  Over the past two decades, I have been on and off diets, losing anywhere from 30 to 80 lbs.  No matter how many successful starts I’ve had, something—a family…
