My favorite TCR training run

In the Meet the Marmots team page I talked about my favorite run in the Pikes Peak region: a 10-11 mile loop connecting Red Rock Canyon Open Space to Section 16. I've been doing it regularly, especially…

Love Hate Relationship with the Incline

Why does everyone love the Incline?  To my readers please answer this.

The negatives:

  • I can't run up the thing so I am just walking
  • To many people, unless it is the winter time or the weather is bad
  • Top section of the trail still needs repair and is one big hazard

The positives:

  • One hell of a leg work out

As you can see I dislike the Incline more than I love it.  Just the other day the attack pack running…

Lions Runners and Bears Oh My

No lions on the course this year for the Garden of the Gods 10 mile and 10k, but there were plenty of runners and one bear.  I did not witness the bear on the course but Don Sanborn snapped some pictures and those pictures went viral.  Thank you to the bear that wondered out on to the course and helped make the Garden of the Gods race world famous.  Each day I am seeing…

Refueling the mind, body, and spirit!

Last week I had an AMAZING opportunity to be a mentor for the Knights of Heroes (KOH) summer camp, which is designed to empower boys and girls who have lost their fathers in military service. Through a multitude of outdoor adventures the campers find and exemplify determination, bravery, leadership, and perseverance. Moreover, the campers were challenged to work…

Running My Second Triple Crown with a New Approach

Hi there. My name is Susanna Barnwell. I am doing my second Triple Crown this year and have been asked to blog about my experiences with the running program I am using to accomplish my goals. So why read my musings? Well, we hear from pros and trainers and industry specialists all the time, but not the regular every day runners out there who…

Accepting the challenge...

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” ~ J.K. Rowlings

The Vulnerable or The Resilient?

The snow is almost gone in the Pikes Peak region, with surrounding mountain ranges still holding deep pockets in their couloirs and shady spots.  As a result, a heck of a lot more people are playing outdoors, exploring new areas, and training hard.  Unfortunately, this also equates to a lot more Search and Rescue (SAR) missions.  For simplicity sake, there are…

Running is my release

My life is like a whirlwind these days, filled with immense projects, impending transitions and decisions affecting me without my control.  Add my crazy dislike for planning beyond a few days, and it’s easy to feel like a backseat rider in a high-speed chase. Running is my release.…

As some say “Teamwork makes the dream work”

I’ve have always been an athlete ever since I can remember. Which also means I have been on countless teams. Being on a team means everything to me. It’s not only a family, but it’s also a group of people working together to obtain a common goal.  Some of my closest friends are people I met on some of the sports teams I played on.

Growing up I was on the cross-country, basketball, and surf team. But once I tore my ACL playing basketball during my senior year of high school,…

Drowning Out Ego

Of all of the voices inside my head, the hardest one for me to drown out is ego. Ego is a nasty bugger (read that as if I said it in a British accent). Typically, long distance runners are used to ignoring a lot of things that our body is asking of us or writing the script for what we think it wants to hear.

“Well yeah, my legs might literally fall off but I’m fine. Really, I’m fine.”

“It’s okay if I eat this entire bag of malt vinegar chips, my body…

It's All About the Benjamins

Whoever said running is a cheap sport never:

a.)    Participated in many races

b.)    Ran year round in seasonal weather

c.)     Ran long distances

d.)    Had an affinity for Lulu Lemon running crops

e.)    All of the above

The correct answer is all of the above.

Sure, you could throw on a pair of ol “sneaks” and hit the road for a mile or three. Running is easy, running is cheap, just throw on what you have and walk out your door, no…

Ai-Yi-Yi

Well, here we go again, a third stab at that great sentinel above Colorado Springs. I mentioned to someone that I was part of a group attempting the Ascent again and this person, a very nice person mind you, never says a bad word about anyone, said "Yeah, I know" and then I distinctly heard them mutter, under their breath "Crazy fools."

Yup, crazy alright, seeing how fast one can haul their butt up a mountain and yet, somehow, in some peculiar way, it just gets in your blood and you…

Running after a surprise cancer diagnosis

I started running at the age of 28, after my first child was born. Along the way, I have run a bunch of marathons as well as some shorter races and several ultra marathons. Over the years, running has kept me happy and sane through a divorce, a remarriage, and while raising my two children. My best friendships have been formed on the roads and trails. My relationship with my husband started and grew out of time spent on Barr trail, Section 16, Palmer Park and Waldo canyon. Running is still how… Continue
