The Big One

Tomorrow is a big day - for many reasons. First, it's Andy's 100th race. Think about that - 100 races that Sand Creek Sports has either hosted or helped with organization. That's a lot of time, effort and dedication to our sport - with not a lot of return…

Random Musings on Running & Barcelona

So here we are only 4 weeks out from the magnum opus of races and I just took an entire week off.  Crazy, I know, and not really what I'd planned.  I'm now naturally concerned about what that desert of a week has done to my training, how much muscle mass I've obviously lost, and what a week at sea level has done to my red blood cells.

I wonder these things, but I don't regret the week off from my mad running schedule.  My much-needed break was spent with my family, in the most…

I made it to Barr Camp...FINALLY!!

I've heard about going up to Barr Camp for years now.  It's a very common training route for those getting ready for Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon.

But, until today, I had not done the full route from base of mountain to Barr Camp.  I did take the cog once last year to Mountain View, stopped by Barr Camp en route to the Peak.

I've run to the top of the W's several times.  I've done a workout at the top of the Peak to treeline (top 3 miles).  But, I hadn't been…

Above the Clouds on Barr Trail

If you've never had an opportunity to spend the night at Barr Camp, I highly suggest it. Renee and Anthony, the current caretakers were accommodating and friendly. I was planning on meeting up with some friends from Denver and they called saying they were stuck in traffic and would be arriving late. I debated hiking the…

Bottom to Top???

The Saturday before the Summer Roundup I went to the top of Pikes Peak and sat up there for a couple of hours.  Normally I would have ran down some and then back up for some Pikes Peak Ascent training.  However, with the Summer Roundup the next day I just wanted to be on top for some altitude time.

As I sat on top and watched runners going up and down I was sad for a second that I wasn’t running.  Yes, it was only for a second and then I was actually happy I wasn’t running, haha.  As…

Running, Cancer and the Gift of Friendship

I have been toying with running a race this fall. I am still trying to determine what distance I am capable of training for and completing. I will likely either attempt a 50k or a 50 mile. My preference would be the 50 mile because I love that distance. However, I just do not know if I am capable of getting adequate training for a 50 miler between now and race day. This week, I did two medium distance runs a few days apart. I ran a flat 16 miler alone one day, and then a hilly 15 miler in…

Getting Serviced

At the Church of the Hidden Root. There is no greater soul-cleansing on a Sunday morning than an 8.5 mile run. Did repeats on the service road (pictured here) at Spruce Mountain. Can’t claim to know exactly how the clinometer app on my phone works but I measured this road at a grade of about 23% at one of its steepest parts. I do know that it’s a half mile long. With the repeats it was a nice, 2-hour workout. I ran comfortably in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Summer Roundup…

Just Say "No"

It's so easy to sign up for races.  All that's required is a runner's high that erases all hesitation and a willingness to pay $40 for a few hours of torture.  This familiarity with the phrase: "Yes, of course I'll run that!" made me think twice this morning.  It was still dark outside when my alarm woke me up at 4:30am.  That would have allowed me 2:30 to prepare for the Barr Trail Mountain Race.  I rolled out of bed, pulled out my Purple and Gold singlet and was about to down a handful of…

Slacker

Although I know there's value in it, there is a part of me that feels kind of silly writing a race report for the Summer Roundup.  Why?  I purposely treated it like any other day - I didn't go to bed early the night before, did no special hydration, didn't dwell on my splits or feel the need to memorize the course in the preceding week.  I didn't taper for it, didn't wear racing flats, didn't do the standard pre-race warmup routine.  I just showed up, ran, and had a great time with my Purple…

2014 UltraInclinathon: Means to an End of a Decade

It seemed like a brilliant idea at times, but mostly, the thought of 24 hours on the Incline scared me. A lot. More than the Inclinathon, more than the Stank, and more than any race I've done. But once a notion like this tickles my brain, there's some deep rooted, personal obligation that requires me…

All systems GO!

Wednesday night racing at it’s finest.  It was a great mid week race for us at the one and only Palmer Park. Conditions were ideal with cloud cover moving in right on target as we were gathering up the ranks and rolling to the start line. This week we had the pleasant surprise of the whole field taking off together at once. This is very cool and how we should always do it. As we took off in a stampeded up the start hill we all had the extra adrenalin rush of being around 40 charging riders…

Reviewing the Roundup & PRD's

The highlight of the second leg of the Triple Crown of Running was passing teammate Sean O’Day. This was made possible by virtue of the new course for 2014 which involved an outer and Inner loop. I passed Sean at the merge point of the two loops as he was finishing up the inner or second loop, probably a good 25 minutes ahead of me. It didn’t take him but a few seconds to pass ME but nevertheless I reveled in my fleeting glory. It’s not every day that a plodder such as I gets to enjoy…

Mass insanity

After taunting the thunderstorms last week (and winning...) I think the storms are coming back to get me. Only this time, they were targeting the entire Pro/Cat 1 field at Ascent Cycling Race #3.... With the Cat 2 racers still finishing up, Andy started the roll call of the entire field - everyone. He started in the normal order - pro men, SS men and so on down the line. Odd. Normally there is a well defined gap between all the fields. And then, after the last cat 2 racer finished, he rolled…

My biggest fear...

With the Ascent less than 6 weeks away, I have to admit I'm starting to get a little nervous.

My biggest fear?

Not finishing in the cutoff time and therefore not officially finishing the Ascent.

Although I am NOT fast, I am in pretty good shape right now.  Even with power hiking most of the course, I think I should have no problem finishing in the cutoff.

However, there are a few things that could happen.…

Racing Bikes and Growing our Sport

You have to walk before you can run and you have to ride before you can race.

I have been spending a lot of time lately thinking about what brings and keep people in cycling and also what are the hurdles that block the way of more people getting involved in this sport. It seems to me that all the benefits of cycling and a bike racing lifestyle are things valued and sought after with much more energy and money than what it costs to pick up a decent bike and helmet and get involved in…

Second Season

Welcome to July. Yikes. It feels like I've been going, going, going since the start of the year without much of a break. And in a way, I have been - from the Super Half Marathon (yes, I play runner sometimes too...) to 24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest, there's been a lot of stuff going on. Not as much racing as in prior years, but the few races have all been very big events - in length, size and stress. The training has been hard and I've had fewer social and fun rides then I'd like. I was…

Summer Round Up

Bubba has officially renamed this race to Summer Pound Up.  I had an idea of the course because I tried to run some of it a few days earlier.  I knew it was going to take my very best to conquer this course.  I did all the things I normally do to insure I would give it my best but this course pounded me.

As I waited for the start I felt good.  The temperature was just right for me.  I thought I was going to get the best of this course.  The first mile was congested but I knew it would…

Purple and Gold Roundup Revelry

This year's new Summer Trail Roundup course offered some different challenges and eliminated the infamous High Drive shuffle. I kind of missed the uphill grind and fast descent of High Drive but the up and down course this year combined with some narrow single track, stairs, and temps starting in the high 60's and quickly climbing to high 70's made for a hot run.

I had run the course with the Striders the prior week so I knew generally what to expect as far as the route. I…

Regaining fitness and post chemo fatigue

Last year at this time, I was coming off of a string of weeks where I had run 80-100 miles per week in preparation for the Vermont 100. I was doing back to back long runs every week, spending hours and hours running hilly single track trails. I felt like Cheyenne Canon was my second home. I was tired from the training, but feeling fit, strong and happy knowing I had done basically all I could to prepare myself to run 100 miles.

This…
