The Jack Quin's Running Club old timers had dreamed of having a race for years. On Saturday it came true as the club hosted the Jack Quinn's Running Club 5K Championship at Monument Valley Park.
"I didn't think I'd ever see this day," said club president Shawn Finley. "Now that we've done it I'm feeling a little melancholy."
The club's officers are a close unit and determined to make the organization one of the best running clubs in the country. They're well on their way. Saturday's run was another big step.
Andrew Catalano, 25, of Colorado Springs, turned in the fastest time, burning up the twisting - but mostly flat - course in 16:58.43.
Mike Stephens, 29, of Colorado Springs, was second in 17:59.51, with Gerald Romero (40, Colorado Springs) placing third in 18:14.03.
Stephens was given the overall title. Race rules dictated that club only club members with 10 runs or more could claim the overall. Catalano is new to the club, but he didn't go home empty handed. The group found some schwag for him and Finley bought him a beer.
Louise Kriel, 41, of Colorado Springs, was the fastest among the women. Kriel clocked 22:05.14. Kerry Page, 44, was second in 22:28.6.
