Gerald Romero, the self proclaimed 'race junkie,' picked up his first win of 2011 Saturday in the Armed Forces Community Run at Peterson Air Force Base.
The 39-year-old Runner's Roost team member won the 10K race in 36 minutes, 11.4 seconds.
"Yeah, it's good to get that first win," Romero said. "This last year, every race has been so competitive. But this is nice. It's good to come out and do the local base run."
Romero always runs toward the front of the pack and dominates his age group. But his race schedule is most impressive. He races nearly every weekend.
"I gotta get out here and use it, use all my training and get out here and race and use it to get ready for the big stuff coming up," he said.
The race was open to the public for the first time and a field of about 200 tackled the 5k and 10K routes.
"We wanted to open it to the public and be a better partner in the community," said race director Les Stewart. "Our course is set up like a little tour of the base. I think we want to extend our friendship to the people here and throughout the state."
Clare Bar of Colorado Springs won the women's 10K in 39:58.5, while Kelly Moon, a District 49 teacher placed second in 40:20 (Bar and Moon pictured above right.)
In the 5K race, Eric Faires  had extra motivation in his winning run. His father, Eddie Faires, is retiring from Air Force this year after 24 years of service. Eric, 20, wanted to win for his dad. He hit the finish line in 17:26.1 and fell into his father's arms.
"I really trained for this race," Faires said. "This was all for my dad. I'm proud of him."

Shely Solberg of Peyton won the women's 5K with a time of 22:36.

The race took on special meaning for Army Major Anthony Borowski, who finished second in the 10K (39:39). Borowski is on 15 days leave from service in Iraq.

"This is great," he said. "I'm not used to the altitude, but this is fun."

Borowski, at right with Romero) said his running community at Camp Speicher in Tikrit helps him to get through some long days.

"You have no idea," he said. "It really gives you a goal, something to achieve."

The race was ran in conjunction with armed services running events in Southwest Asia, Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and Thumrait Air Base in Oman.

Borowski said he runs with the 4th Infantry Division Marathon Training team.

"It's important to stay mentally and physically strong in a combat zone," he said.
